ANIMALS IN PAKISTAN FLOOD

Kinship Circle - 2010-08-20 - Pakistan Flood 01

Pakistan Animal Welfare Society
www.talkaurora.com/aggregator/sources/5

KINSHIP CIRCLE is following the Pakistan flood, among the worst in modern history. With human aid barely underway, news about farmed, companion or wild animals is limited. IFAW Emergency Relief Manager Dick Green reports that IFAW received: “an urgent request from an official in the Punjab province of northern Pakistan: They’re in desperate need of food for animals [who] have survived the floods.”

Farmed animals camp on roads with people. In some areas, roads are the only dry spots amid floodwaters. With 20 million people impacted by rising waters, the animal toll is unimaginable. News reports say water may not recede until the end of this month, making aid efforts treacherous…

AUGUST GULF OIL DISASTER UPDATE

Kinship Circle - 2010-08-20 - Gulf Disaster Update 01

ALL PHOTOS (C) WA2S.ORG / KINSHP CIRCLE

AUGUST UPDATE: Kinship Circle’ Brenda Shoss soon heads to the Gulf to join Team #5 off barrier islands and waterways in search of oiled animals. We urge animal advocates to not be lulled into an “everything is okay now” attitude. It isn’t. For example: Remember the baby Royal Tern chicks we found oiled on Queen Bess Island 6/12/10 [PHOTO ABOVE]? Conservation Coordinator Drew Wheelan informs us that they all died. For Kinship’s Rachel Laskowski, part of the ALL EYES ON THE GULF Expedition team that originally spotted/reported these babies, the news is heartbreaking.

Still, many others have been saved. We won’t give up our search for them. The oil’s impact has evolved…and now we need UNDERWATER CAMERAS and additional VIDEO GEAR to find and report animals in its toxic path.

“WA2S.org Executive Director Tom McPhee, with volunteer Jonathan Shurtz, spot two oiled pelicans. Jon immediately calls Unified Command to relay the birds’ GPS coordinates. Later, authorities confirm that these oiled pelicans are rescued and transported to the IBRCC bird cleaning operation. We’re thanked for ongoing efforts to locate and report oiled wildlife.”

Kinship Circle - 2010-07-18 - Help Us Find Oiled Animals 05

“While investigating Black Mangrove Island, LA, Kinship Circle’s Esther Regelson and Darla Wolak, spot a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill. The severely oiled bird fights to stay atop an oil boom. The sighting is called in, but it becomes unbearable to watch the bird struggle to keep from drowning. So the bird is caught, brought to emergency triage, and then transferred to IBRRC Fort Jackson Rehabilitation Center. During one of our regular visits to IBRRC, we learn that this bird will live.”

Kinship Circle’s Sister Michael Marie and Bonnie Morrison returned to Chile on June 25…and bussed cross country to the coastal village of Tirua. Kinship Circle reunited with Socorro Animal Chile (SACH) veterinarians, who were conducting a spay/neuter and first aid clinic for quake and tsunami stricken animals. Bonnie and Sister presented a large monetary gift, along with six boxes of medical supplies. Sister, who is trained as a vet tech, then assisted with surgery, while Bonnie served as a recovery room nurse.

7/4/10 – Houma, LA: Kinship Circle/WA2S.org vols fly over ground zero in a Coast Guard plane with CNN and other media. Smoke. Fire. Oil. Rusty globs and streaks stretch for miles, oozing toward a living shore.

7/3/10 – Venice, LA: While on the water with American Bird Conservancy, loud Coast Guard airboats zip past and scare birds. An oiled pelican lags behind his spooked flock. Report him? Officials won’t come till he’s flightless.

7/3/10 – IBRRC, LA: For every bird rescued, hundreds more aren’t. Each mother here means babies abandoned out there. Only state or federally licensed wildlife experts are authorized to rescue wildlife at this time.

7/2/10 – Black Mangrove Island, LA: Our team members, embedded with USFW, spot a juvenile Roseate Spoonbill (ABOVE). The severely oiled, fragile bird struggles to stay atop an oil boom. He’s flightless and could drown. The sighting is called in, but our boat captain cannot bear to watch any more. He floats within reach and grabs the worn-down bird, who is taken to Grand Isle Marina for emergency triage. The bird is then transferred to IBRRC Bird Cleaning Operation. During one of our regular visits to IBRRC, we see that this lucky bird is recovering. PHOTOS (C) WA2S.org/Kinship Circle

Subject: ASI News from the Gulf

The crisis in the Gulf of Mexico is on everyone’s mind, and images of oil-coated birds, turtles and other wildlife remind us of how terrible the toll is and will continue to be. Often forgotten are the countless microorganisms and other small animals the loss of whom makes this truly an ecological disaster. Although the Animals and Society Institute is not directly involved with animal rescue, we nevertheless support those on the front lines and will get behind all efforts to protect the environment from oil spills, factory farm pollution and any other human-based threat. We encourage you to stay informed and help where you can.

Oiled Perspectives from the Gulf Coast

Animals & Society - 2010-06-23 - ASI News from the Gulf 01

Kristin L. Stewart, ASI Board member and co-author of our dolphin policy paper, lives on the Gulf Coast (pictured above with Ursa Minor, Mango and husband Ben) and sends this eyewitness report:

The beaches of Northwest Florida have been my home for more than 15 years. President Obama visited us in Pensacola Beach on Tuesday morning, and from the Oval Office that night he addressed the nation to talk about the BP oil spill, recognizing it as “the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced.” I think he is right on about that, although it still does not seem to capture the magnitude of this thing. I cannot fathom what the days, months, years, even generations ahead may reveal about the true breadth of this disaster and what it will mean for coastal and marine life and habitat.

Animals & Society - 2010-06-23 - ASI News from the Gulf 02

Wildlife biologists say that, unlike dolphins, turtles do not show avoidance behavior when encountering oiled waters, and birds can hardly avoid the affects of oil. Still, I have seen dolphins off the shore here as recently as today and, strangely enough, since the spill began in late April, I’ve noticed far fewer pelicans and seagulls at the beach than normal. That doesn’t mean the birds have escaped the oil, of course. Although I haven’t yet come across oiled wildlife, I’m not looking forward to that inevitability. The official count of affected wildlife along the Gulf coast, as of June 16, is up to 1,417 birds (alive and dead), 449 sea turtles (353 of whom were found dead); and 43 marine mammals -almost all of whom were dead dolphins. (Photo above was taken at Nela Beach last week.)

During his speech, President Obama also characterized pretty well what most people on the Gulf Coast are feeling these days: “sadness…anger…[and] a wrenching anxiety” about what this means for us, our environment, and our way of life. I include all animals in that definition of “us.” From my current perspective, clean-up crews seem disorganized and lethargic; accurate, reliable information about the spill and its impact has been spotty at best; and the question of how best to respond to this unprecedented event – now and in the future – remains urgent, complex, and utterly unclear.

(Watch for more updates in our future newsletters)

Protests Target BP

Animals & Society - 2010-06-23 - ASI News from the Gulf 03

On June 8, the 50th day of the BP oil spill, a series of vigils were held around the country, organized by MoveOn.org. Managing Director Bee Friedlander (above, right) attended the event in Ann Arbor, Michigan, along with friends from the local animal advocacy movement. Bee spoke briefly comparing the current oil spill with the 1989 Exxon Valdez tragedy. She noted that many of those in attendance were there specifically because of the animals affected by the disaster. (Photo by Kate Brindle)

Oil Isn’t the Only Thing Spewing into the Environment

Animals & Society - 2010-06-23 - ASI News from the Gulf 04

Sadly, the assault on the environment in the Gulf is not the only major environmental threat in the United States. Every day, millions of gallons of bacteria-laden manure runoff from concentrated animal feeding operations – CAFOs, or factory farms – pollute groundwater, contaminate crops and combine with methane from farmed animals to contribute more to greenhouse emissions than any other industry, including transportation.

The CAFO Hothouse: Climate Change, Industrial Agriculture and the Law,” by David N. Cassuto, is the ASI’s most recent policy paper. It was written to offer activists, writers, students, legislators and consumers a concise overview of this extremely serious issue and instigate a reform of agricultural policy in this country.

Just like the growing consumption of oil and gas, the world’s increasing appetite for meat is resulting in environmental changes of huge proportions. In his paper, Professor Cassuto reports that “Worldwide, demand for animal products is growing by 3 percent per year in developing countries…[and] is expected to increase an additional 35 percent by 2015 and to double by 2050.” He notes that 5,000 pigs on a single farm product as much raw sewage as a town of 20,000 people; however, few government regulations cover factory farms, and the meat, egg and dairy industries are not held accountable for this pollution.

To learn more about this important issue, click here to order your own copy of “The CAFO Hothouse” today!

HAS Fellowship News Reaches Australia

The University of Melbourne, home to one of this year’s Human-Animal Studies Summer Fellowship scholars, recently reported on the ASI program in its Voice publication.

Siobhan O’Sullivan, Ph.D., of the university’s School of Social and Political Sciences is at Clark University now with her HAS colleagues. The UM calls the ASI “American’s premier animal studies think tank” and notes that Dr. Sullivan recently received a grant to establish a Web site that will link other HAS scholars throughout Australia, New Zealand and the neighboring South Pacific islands. (Note: The article erroneously lists the “Humane Society of America” as a fellowship sponsor.)

Please Help Us Move Forward

We share your frustration and concern over events in the world that seem to overwhelm our desire to move forward rather than backward when it comes to saving animals. There is no lack of bad news, but there is also no lack of resolve for turning things around. For the sake of the animals – and the world we share with them – we cannot give up, we can only move forward.

Your support of our academic and policy programs helps change things for the better. We value your membership, participation and determination, and commit to doing all we can for a better tomorrow.

For the animals,

Ken Shapiro
Executive Director

Worst environmental catastrophe in US history could foreshadow more to come – Please ask President Obama to permanently ban all new offshore drilling

Dear Humanitarian:

The massive and continuing torrent of oil from the April 20th explosion on and subsequent sinking of BP’s Deepwater Horizon ultra-deepwater drilling rig is the worst environmental disaster in US history. The unfolding devastation will forever alter the entire ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Over 100 million gallons of oil are estimated to have been released into the Gulf already, nine times more oil than was released by the catastrophic wreck of the Exxon Valdez. Recent estimates indicate that, two months after the initial explosion, 2.5 million gallons continue to spew into the fragile and once ecologically rich Gulf ecosystem every day! In other words, BP is releasing the equivalent of a new Exxon Valdez every four and a half days.

AWI eAlert - 2010-06-22 - BP & Offshore Drilling

A rescue worker lifts an oil-covered turtle out of a hand net.
——————————

Oiled and dead birds, sea turtles, dolphins and fish are showing up in increasing quantities, and many more dead animals are likely to be lost at sea never to be accounted for. Oil is approaching sensitive breeding areas for birds on marshes and beaches, and scientists are predicting a near total breeding failure for those birds this year.

More sea turtles, fish and marine mammals are likely to suffer as the toxic plume, currently measuring 20 miles long and five miles wide, disperses through the water column. The already tenuous future of threatened and endangered sperm whales, manatees, sea turtles, and brown pelicans is particularly worrisome. At least twenty national wildlife refuges and forty endangered species will be impacted as oil moves through the powerful waters of the Gulf Stream. We will not truly understand the full effects of this unprecedented and still escalating disaster for many years to come.

The effects on wildlife of the experimental dispersants used by BP to break up the oil are largely unknown and may, in fact, do more harm than good, by spreading chemicals throughout the food chain, as well as spreading the oil further. BP has applied over a million gallons of the toxic chemical to break down the oil and disperse it at sea, protecting shorelines while sacrificing countless animals in the water column and those on the sea floor.

The damage predictions are devastating, and efforts thus far to stop the flow of oil, largely unsuccessful. Crews have been using a variety of methods to keep oil from reaching beaches, wetlands and estuaries, but cleanup efforts have been erratic and insufficient, resulting from BP’s gross lack of emergency preparedness and intentional trivialization of the risks. There have even been reports of BP workers blocking efforts to rescue endangered sea turtles and burning the animals alive[1] [2]. The lack of government oversight and the failure to follow even loose regulatory measures are painfully apparent.

The industry-friendly Minerals Management Service has allowed, essentially, oil companies to self-regulate for years, encouraging dangerous drilling operations to move forward without environmental safeguards.

On May 27, President Obama announced a 6-month “moratorium” on new offshore drilling permits. However, most of the existing 3,500 drilling rigs and platforms in U.S. coastal waters (79 of them deepwater wells), including some particularly dangerous projects, are allowed to continue, like ticking time bombs. The BP Atlantis, for example, one of the largest oil platforms in the world and also in the Gulf, is documented to have serious safety problems, yet remains in operation [3] [4]. Were something to go awry on the Atlantis, the Deepwater Horizon disaster would pale in comparison.

Although the scale of the disaster is overwhelming and the situation seems hopeless, there is something vitally important you can do:

Write to the President

This catastrophe illustrates the need for drilling operations to be strongly regulated and vigorously enforced. Please write a letter to President Obama and request that his Administration:

* immediately and permanently ban all future offshore drilling projects;
* immediately shut down BP Atlantis and other such unsafe drilling projects until proven safe;
* conduct a review (including their impacts to wildlife) of all deepwater platforms currently under construction and in operation and set a rigorous timeframe for resolving issues;
* halt the use of chemical dispersants until their impacts on the environment are fully understood and determined not to pose a significant threat;
* require all oil drilling to comply with environmental laws;
* ensure that wildlife rescue efforts proceed uninterrupted and investigate claims that BP is blocking rescue efforts; and
* develop strong recovery actions for threatened and endangered species.

If you prefer, you can email President Obama through AWI’s Compassion Index by clicking here.

For Our All Eyes On The Gulf Expedition In Oil Spill States

The truth about the BP oil spill lies in Gulf waters. We are grateful to locals who ferry Kinship Circle/WA2S.org teams in their boats from Florida to Louisiana. But, to follow oiled wildlife leads, we NEED OUR OWN BOAT:

DO YOU HAVE (OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS):

* A boat at least 30 feet long
* A boat with a cabin to sleep 4-6 people

BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig now spews an estimated 100,000 barrels, or 4.2 million gallons daily, into Gulf waters. Kinship Circle — in partnership with World Animal Awareness Society for the All Eyes On The Gulf (AEOTG) expedition — is armed with camera lenses and notepads in oil-affected states. Our disaster responders act as “spotters” to alert Unified Command to suffering animals and facilitate their capture and care.

As we watch the tragedy unfold…in LA, AL, FL, MS…we realize how much YOU, the public, are not being told. For birds, turtles, dolphins, whales, fishes and other mammals — the disaster has barely begun.

KINSHIP CIRCLE DEPLOYS TO THE GULF OIL SPILL

June 12, 2010 — Venice, Louisiana: Kinship Circle has gone where few other animal organizations have been: Into the trenches of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf. We are there right now, in an investigative capacity to document oil-affected animals and alert Unified Command where they are. Animal rescue groups — other than specialized organizations authorized under Unified Command — currently do not have access into restricted zones. But select press and documentarians do.

Kinship Circle was asked to “embed” with acclaimed documentary filmmaker Tom McPhee for his All Eyes On The Gulf (AEOTG) expedition. Our disaster responders are on the ground to focus camera lenses and notepads on contaminated parts of Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. AEOTG is a scientific tour to collect visual records. It’s also a window to the truth. As part of AEOTG’s crew of filmmakers and photojournalists, Kinship Circle may deploy teams through August, as funds permit.

Tom McPhee’s organization, World Animal Awareness Society, is approved under Unified Command (BP, Coast Guard, fed/state officials) to access affected areas. All team members wear photo ID badges.

WHERE ARE THE ANIMALS?

On 6/10/10 U.S. Fish and Wildlife reported that more than 400 oiled birds were taken to Fort Jackson Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Buras, Louisiana in a span of several days — over five times as many than in the last six weeks combined. Where are the photos and clips? According to CNN, BP is attempting to block reporters from photographing animals altogether.

A FILMMAKER’S VISION

Tom McPhee’s All Eyes On The Gulf is a portal to the “human/animal intersection” in this disaster. Team members undergo two-day training before they journey to oil damaged regions across five states. Volunteers gather visual evidence from ground, water and air levels. They act as “spotters” to supply Unified Area Command with location coordinates for suffering animals and facilitate their capture and care. Detailed data collection procedures are used and volunteers are prepped for encounters oil distressed animals.

Help Save Lives By Supporting All Eyes On The Gulf

As evidenced by Kinship Circle’s aid in Chile’s 8.8 quake and tsunami — disaster response is expensive. We’re rarely involved in two catastrophic missions at the same time. But as animals are treated for wounds and disease in Chile…victims of BP’s oil spill await aid in the U.S.

Subject: DawnWatch: BP oil disaster — coverage highlights. Please ask the media for more. 5/9/10

The biggest news for animals over the last week has been the BP oil catastrophe in the gulf. Millions of animals, including 5,000 dolphins, endangered tortoises, pelicans, and countless fish live in that gulf and are dying slow and agonizing deaths from ingesting and inhaling the oil that our species has been vomiting into their home at a rate of 200,000 gallons per day. I find myself thinking of Avatar, where humans were invading Pandora after having totally trashed Earth. Think of what the Gulf of Mexico was like just weeks ago, and what it is like now: it seems that we really are going to completely trash our planet if we don’t change our ways, and change fast.

I happened to see a screening of the movie “Fuel” last week. Winner of the 2008 Best Documentary award at the Sundance Film Festival, it is now more timely than ever. It focuses on what our dependence on oil is doing to us and the earth, and it gives clean energy solutions. Please check out the trailer at www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPrH5za6BlE and get a copy of the DVD when it come out on June 22.

The BP explosion came just weeks after President Obama announced plans for more offshore drilling along our coastlines, an announcement that broke the hearts of environmentalists who had thought they had elected a president with similar values. While it is hard, as an animal holocaust is underway in the gulf, to even think of a silver lining, it seemed at first that at least this blanket of oil over the gulf would bury those plans. Yet as oil poured into the gulf Obama said, “Let me be clear. I continue to believe that domestic oil production is an important part of our overall strategy for energy security.”

The moratorium the administration has announced on new offshore drilling is for three weeks — until the cause of the BP explosion is determined. It doesn’t take into account that the next accident that wipes out a different ocean might have a different cause.

I urge you to please sign the Environment America petition asking Obama to reverse course on offshore drilling. The petition is at: tinyurl.com/24sqvf6

I have been scouring the media for animal news from the gulf. There isn’t much. CNN’s Brooke Baldwin has been on the scene at the gulf. I happened to tune in the first day she took a boat out to the spill. The boat pulled up alongside a sea turtle who we saw coming up trying to get air in the midst of the oil. At least 30 sea turtles have washed up dead so far.

The Fox News website has a slideshow headed, “Animal Victims of the Gulf Spill,” including some of the turtles, at www.foxnews.com/slideshow/scitech/2010/05/03/oil-spill-animals-rescue/#slide=1
(My thanks to Richard Hernandez for that link.)

The Center for Biological Diversity has been following events and posting relevant press. It is a good place to keep track of what’s going on. You’ll find their posts at tinyurl.com/38hqun5 (I thank Candaca Rocha for that link.)

I was shocked by the May 5 Washington Post story, by Juliet Eilperin, headed “U.S. exempted BP’s Gulf of Mexico drilling from environmental impact study.”

It tells us,

“The Interior Department exempted BP’s calamitous Gulf of Mexico drilling operation from a detailed environmental impact analysis last year.” It discusses the “decision by the department’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) to give BP’s lease at Deepwater Horizon a ‘categorical exclusion’ from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).”

That story is on line at: tinyurl.com/34hsldq

Media interviews with representatives from the Center for Biological Diversity about that exemption, and the lobby money behind it, are well worth watching. Two of the most compelling have been on media outlets on the opposite end of the political spectrum, reminding us that environmentalism, like animal protection, need not be a partisan issue.

The Fox News White House correspondent, Major Garret, gave us a short and hard-hitting report about the exemption, which you can watch on line at: tinyurl.com/26s9voc

If you are a Fox News viewer, please let the network know how much you appreciated the report and that you want to see more on the BP oil spill crisis. Fox News takes comments via email at yourcomments [at] foxnews.com

Democracy Now brought us similar though more in depth coverage on May 7. You can watch it on line at: tinyurl.com/3ajgzc2

You can also email it to your friends, by clicking on the “email” link on that page.

Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman also did a radio blog on this issue, headed “BP: Billionaire Polluter.” It is well worth hearing or reading on line at: www.democracynow.org/blog/2010/5/5/bp_billionaire_polluter

Please thank Democracy Now for its coverage of the disaster and ask them to keep on the story. Democracy Now takes comments at www.democracynow.org/contact?to=8

CNN’s Jane Velez Mitchell, always superb on animal and environmental issues, did an “Issues” segment in which she called for a move to electric cars.

You can watch the brief segment on line at: tinyurl.com/265fqdd

Please recommend it to your friends (by hitting the “recommend” button) and please thank Jane for her continued commitment to animal and environmental issues — her producers need to hear how much their viewers appreciate her stance. Jane takes comments at www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form5.html?106

The Center for Biological Diversity is calling for the resignation of big oil buddy, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, in light of the Gulf calamity. You can read more about Salazar at: tinyurl.com/25fll2e

Animal advocates need to learn more about Salazar. His department is also responsible for the recent delisting of Grey Wolves as an endangered species. Further, the “All-Creatures” animal advocacy site has a petition to have him removed as Interior Secretary due to his support for the ranching community and participation in the mustang round-ups and decimation of America’s wild horse population. You’ll find that petition on line at: www.all-creatures.org/alert/alert-20100421.html

Despite the animal annihilation underway in the Gulf, I have found relatively little information on animal news lists about the issue. I was therefore struck by Joshua Green’s superb blog on the website for The Atlantic, headed “No Energy,” in which he discusses what seems to be a lack of appropriate outrage. He shares the Obama quote that I shared above, Obama’s commitment to more drilling, and he writes:

“In the wake of the Gulf oil spill, the benefits of clean sources of energy are clearer than ever. What’s so infuriating about the Washington response so far is that there’s no indication the disaster has prompted Obama or anyone else to reconsider his position. In the past, major disasters shifted the terms of debate. This time, nobody is budging. …. Washington eventually responds to public outrage. (Just ask Goldman Sachs.) But for now, energy can join the long list of issues on which Washington leadership has vanished.”

The full column is on line at www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/05/no-energy/56285/

You can comment right below it or thank him for it by email at joshuagreen [at] theatlantic.com

I hope when the animal advocacy community watches some of the interviews above, about the deals made with BP, and thinks about the millions of animals dying slowly in the gulf, we will see some of that outrage to which the White House responds. The media has a huge impact on public thinking so please encourage the media to stay on this story.

CNN takes feedback for general news at www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form1.html?39

Let them know we want interviews with environmentalists such as the representatives of the Center Biological Diversity.

Please send letters to the editor to your local papers, and contact your favorite shows, asking for coverage to keep what is going on in the gulf top of mind for the public. The animals and the Earth need your voice.

Yours and the animals’,

5/9/10 – KINSHIP CIRCLE ANIMAL DISASTER AID

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Earthquakes. Oil Spills. Floods. Too much to process. Our senses get dulled.

But I am so upset about a phone call I received that I am writing to you personally. Traci Dawson, our Team 3 leader in Chile, reports that an evacuee camp in Talquahano wants to kill all its companion animals. People who lost everything in Chile’s 8.8 earthquake and tsunami can’t even feed themselves. They don’t want to watch their animals starve to death.

Kinship Circle and SACH (Animal Relief Chile) responded immediately with food and veterinary first aid. We met with the tent camp’s “Mayor.” The animals here are hungry, many injured, some sick.

We rescue litters burrowed inside wreckage, almost daily.

This kitten has a broken femur bone that went untreated since the earthquake.

There are 30 tent camps along Chile’s ravaged coast. People and animals occupy row after row of tents. We fear a similar mentality will invade all the camps. Though we travel north and south of Concepcion, we routinely run out of sutures, latex gloves… One of our veterinarians in Chile now, Dr. Dan Meakin, even performed surgery on a dog in an open field. At times we can’t afford the van rental to ferry our team, vet supplies and food.

This rescued kitten and puppy are so happy to eat, they have no problem sharing the bowl!

We promise the camp in Talquahano we will return. We won’t let despair propel them to shoot their own animals. But the situation distresses me deeply. It speaks volumes about Chile’s quake/tsunami victims…and how the world seems to have forgotten them. People assume they can recover on their own. They’re wrong, especially when it comes to animals.

Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle, 5/9/10

We need funding to treat animals and distribute food.

BP OIL SPILL IN GULF / DISASTER OVERVIEW

– 5/5/10: Unified command activated for West Coast of Florida: Reps from BP, U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are meeting to plan multi-agency response. They’ve also met with over 30 NGO environmental groups: Tampa Bay Watch, Save our Seabirds, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, Sierra Club, etc. — in preparation for the worst case.

– 5/4/10: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says the oil slick seems to move toward Alabama and Florida coasts, as well as the Chandeleur Islands off Louisiana’s southern tip. www.noaawatch.gov

– 5/4/10: U.S. Air Force prepares C-130s for spill response. Members of the 910th Airlift Wing are in Mississippi to help with oil spill clean up.

– 5/4/10: BP spokesperson Bill Salvin reports that three four-story, 70-ton “containment domes” will be lowered over leaks — to trap oil and help pump it to the surface. Other attempts such as a shutoff valve and floating booms have mostly failed — in part due to rough winds and seas.

– 5/3/10: Oil spews at a rate of roughly 5000 barrels (210,000 gallons) per day from three sections of piping. Birds and other animals are vulnerable because they are in reproducing cycles. Young animals may become oiled and parents may plunge into dark waters in search of food. There could be lasting repercussions for fragile wetlands along the Mississippi River.

– 4/22/10: BP’s oil rig collapses into the gulf, after an explosion on 4/20/10. Oil seeps out and BP, while aligned with government agencies and private contractors, cannot stop the flow of crude from the well.

– 4/20/10: A BP (British Petroleum) oil rig explodes. BP, operator of Deepwater Horizon oil rig situated 5,000 feet below the surface in Gulf waters, accepts responsibility for the disaster.

We are watching the animal response to the BP oil spill. Presently, U.S. government, oil companies, and specialized oil decontamination/wildlife agencies are deployed. Some NGOs have volunteers on standby, but no one should self deploy to this high-security zone without invitation from the unified command (governing agency). KINSHIP CIRCLE IS NOT RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS AT THIS TIME.

3. Tubul Came Into This World On A Crash And A Wave…

Kinship Circle - 2010-05-05 - Chile 01

The floppy-eared puppy was born just days before an 8.8 earthquake and tsunami swept over Chile’s coastal towns. We don’t know how he escaped waters that made 5 to 6 feet rings around buildings. We don’t know where he hid as structures collapsed. We do know the pup dubbed Francisco de Tubul did it alone. Somehow this tiny dog — crippled, starving — stayed alive…

1) FIELD RESCUE + FIRST AID: Kinship Circle’s team works with Chilean veterinarians in the coastal towns of: Villa Futura, Santa Clara Talchuano, Calita Los Morros, Calita il Fiernillo… We saw 500 roaming animals in one area alone. Each day, we treat wounds, infection, parasites, insect infestation, worms, broken bones, etc.

2) VACCINATION & TAGGING: We hope to vaccinate and ID animals — to dissuade the government from a mass kill of animals due to human health concerns.

3) TEMPORARY CLINIC/SHELTER: Chilean vets and Kinship Circle want to create a one-year clinic/shelter. Our emergency shelter plan — including surgical, diagnostic/treatment supplies, animal care items, and a project manager — runs just over $700,000. We already visit the tent camps. to treat evacuee animals like the little girl’s dog above.

Kinship Circle works alongside Chilean veterinarians to save them — but can’t get animals off the streets without your help. Worse, Chile’s government has discussed a cull of 700,000 animals in hard hit communities.

As we travel the coast, Kinship Circle IC Traci Dawson likens it to Chile’s “Upper Ninth Ward,” in reference to a Katrina ravaged community in New Orleans. Pre-quake strays with mange, malnutrition, infection…blend with animals displaced by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and tsunamis.

Still, that puppy in the middle of the road? She is safe and will be adopted. The animals near the oil spill? They are fed and clean.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:
• To send teams over several months, including airfare, van rental, field rescue gear, etc.
• To position our project manager on site and maintain daily communications.
• To (funds permitting) develop a temp clinic/shelter for injured, sick and homeless.

4/2/10: Villa Futura, north of Concepcion, Chile

OVERVIEW: Kinship Circle team members Traci Dawson, June Towler, Shawndra Michell, Maureen Valentine and Byron Wilkes work in a temp vet clinic, with three Chilean veterinarians, student vets, and six volunteers from a SACH (Socorro Animal Chile / Animal Relief Chile) member group, Animal Dignity. Outside the clinic, a line of people and animals stretch down the sidewalk…

ACTIVITIES: The turnout is staggering. There are virtually no neutered dogs… Vets examine animals, checking eyes, teeth, ears, glands, neck region, flea infestation, spines, organs, heart, etc. Skin disorders are prevalent, as are wounds and bites.

ISSUES: The clinic runs out of pest spray, latex gloves and paper towels. Though Kinship donates latex gloves, there still aren’t enough.

STATS: Today the clinic sees over 200 animals.

4/1/10: Santa Clara Talchuano / 9:00 am

OVERVIEW: An earthquake and tsunami crashed into this “fishing town” near ground zero. Torn nets and debris cover beaches and streets. Numerous dogs rove amid rubble. Homes are rimmed with waterlines about 5 feet high. Buildings have Katrina-like mold, mud, water damage and collapsed walls.

ACTIVITIES: We spot a nursing dog. Fishermen lead us to the vicinity of her den. We search for her pups to evaluate their condition, but mom has tunneled so deep underground that we are unable to safely reach them.

Some evacuated locals left animals behind. An extremely large stray population wander streets and deserted buildings. All seem friendly, if skittish. We don’t encounter any aggressives.

ISSUES: Mange, wounds, starvation, lack of water. Food is distributed in measured amounts because many sell food rather than feed animals.

SIGHTING STATS: Roughly 100-150 dogs and unnumbered cats.

4/1/10: Calita Los Morros / 2:30 pm

OVERVIEW: Military tents and small shacks of wood and pallets serve as evacuee camps here. Many are with animals, but not all. Some conflict erupts between neighbors with and without animals…

ACTIVITIES: The team provides food and medical care to animals in the camp. Two cats with severe upper respiratory disease are treated on site.

During street rounds, we visit a family with multiple dogs — including a mom with a large litter and several cats. All animals are checked, treated and left with food. KC revisits a resident who told SACH she’d leave with her dogs. As suspected, she did not take them. The abandoned dogs are fed and we’ll attempt to find a home for them…

ISSUES: Mange, injuries, wounds, starvation, TVT, distemper. TVT, a canine venereal virus prevalent here, is transmitted via contact (sexual, touch/rub open wounds, nasal). Dogs get large red “cauliflower” tumors…

SIGHTING STATS: Approximately 200 dogs/cats.

4/1/10: Calita il Fiernillo, Quake causes oil spills / 5:00 pm

OVERVIEW: The earthquake caused an oil spill at a refinery along this town’s shore. Dogs and cats wade through black-water puddles. One cat is found atop a roof drenched in oil… Animals are decontaminated, but with no temp shelter, we can only release them.

In a an area swarming with strays, we capture and treat a very skittish dog whose staked out his “spot” on a slab of cardboard. Down the road, we find an 8-week-old puppy dazed and ragged in the middle of an intersection. SACH takes the puppy to a clinic, where she’ll remain till healthy enough to adopt out. Kinship Circle team members contribute money toward the pup’s clinic fees, as SACH reveals they are now completely out of money.

SIGHTING STATS: Over the course of the day, we see an estimated 500 dogs. The stray population has ballooned with animals displaced by this disaster.

Why Chile? The answer lies in their eyes…

WHY CHILE?

Kinship Circle - 2010-03-29 - Why Chile 02

Animals have no borders, so when Chileans asked Kinship Circle to send teams to help displaced animals, we got to work. We are now in Chile for rescue, first aid and the eventual construction of a temp tent clinic/shelter to house homeless animals, treat injuries, vaccinate, and spay/neuter.

WHY CHILE?

A stretch of coastal towns, about 500-600 miles from Santiago, Chile are ruined from an 8.8 earthquake, aftershocks, and two tsunamis. Still, cries of animals are heard from the rubble. Many are sick from drinking saltwater… It will take 4 to 5 days for a SACH/Kinship Circle convoy to log animal numbers, leave food/water and treat any injured or sick animals.

I wonder how we will find the money to finance all that needs to be done for thousands… Will people care enough about animals in Chile to contribute?

WHY CHILE?

Kinship Circle - 2010-03-29 - Why Chile 01

Anyone who looks into their eyes would see the same sadness and confusion that I see. That look, a mix of hunger and hopelessness, was Katrina’s hallmark. For some rescuers, it is a look that can never be erased.

How do you turn away from a plea for help? From tears…and stories of animals left behind? YOU DON’T. Brenda Shoss, president, Kinship Circle

Chile’s Animals – Worse Than We Thought. Help Us Be There.

Animals with broken bones. Eyes cloudy with saltwater.
A kitten cut. Puppies under rubble. There are thousands more, each one a bark and purr unheard… THIS IS CHILE, post-quake.

Kinship Circle - 2010-03-15 - Chile's Animals - Worse Than We Thought 01

Dear Supporters,

I just got off the phone with Kinship Circle’s Chile contact. She described the forgotten victims of Chile’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake on 2/27/10 — followed by 20+ aftershocks, some as high as 7.2 and 6.9, and two tsunamis.

Socorro Animal Chile, SACH (Animal Relief Chile) is a coalition of Chilean animal protection groups united for the relief of an estimated 700,000 (or more) animals scattered across Dichato, Constitucion and Pichilemu, Chile. SACH sends three veterinarian-led teams into the field daily. They’ve formally requested assistance from Kinship Circle’s disaster response team.

SACH has also asked us to raise funds on their behalf, with three main goals to:

1. Erect a temporary tent shelter/clinic to care for animals abandoned in the earthquake.
2. Carry out a spay/neuter campaign.
3. Focus on transport and adoption campaigns, particularly in the U.S.

SACH needs Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid in Chile to assist with:
— Search and Rescue / Trapping
— In-Field First Aid
— Wound Transport to Veterinary Clinics
— In-Field Sustenance (food/water program)
— Assessment and Tracking of Animal Populations
— Emergency Sheltering (once a temporary staging area/clinic is established)

WE NEED TO RAISE $500,000.

I know you have DONATION FATIGUE! We wouldn’t ask, with Haiti animal aid still underway, if it weren’t critical. I ask for you to reach deep, to help with funding needs outlined below. We can’t keep our promise to Chile’s animals without funding, as most of our resources went to Haiti work.

With deep gratitude,

Brenda Shoss, president, Kinship Circle

A Plea From Earthquake-Stricken Chile

Dear Ms. Shoss and Kinship Circle,

The earthquake and following tsunami that Chile suffered on the early morning of the 27th of February devastated several small towns close to the coast. Thousands of animals are silent victims of this catastrophe. Hundreds of dogs live with their owners in shelters and thousands roam the ruins of towns and cities. The dogs’ guardians have lost everything and do not have the resources to feed their animals. Some opted to abandon them.

Chilean animal welfare groups and veterinarians decided to work together to help animals and created Socorro Animal Chile (Animal Relief Chile).

Socorro Animal Chile (Animal Relief Chile) formally requests assistance from Kinship Circle for our animal aid operation in Dichato, Constitucion and Pichilemu, Chile. We need trained animal disaster responders and rescue and veterinary specialists. On behalf of the animal organizations in SACH/Animal Relief Chile, we ask that Kinship Circle deploy its team to Chile to work within our animal disaster plan, in response to Chile’s earthquake.

We also ask Kinship Circle to temporarily receive donations in the United States on behalf of Socorro Animal Chile. We urgently need funding to sustain our work for animals. Difficult bureaucratic steps necessary to opening a Paypal account ourselves, in Chile, have prompted SACH to request financial aid from other countries, especially the United States. That is the reason we ask Kinship Circle to accept funds on our behalf.

For all your help I am grateful,

Alejandra Cassino, Chief Coordinator
Adriana De La Garza, International Affairs

3/9/10 – KINSHIP CIRCLE ANIMAL DISASTER AID
Hope Has Wheels! $1.1M Pledged For Lasting Animal Aid In Haiti

WHY AM I HERE? We highly recommend you view Tom McPhee’s extraordinary short, “Why Am I Here?” Tom, Executive Director of World Animal Awareness Society — and creator of the Katrina animal rescue film, American Opera — explains why he traveled to Haiti to film animal aid operations with SODOPRECA. The film’s rich texture and breathtaking scenes will make you feel as if you went with him: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg6Ng9jeGTk

Kinship Circle - 2010-03-09 - Hope Has Wheel - Animal Aid in Haiti 01

Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Hope arrived on four wheels…

…Underneath a fully equipped veterinary mobile clinic! As of March 4, 2010, ARCH has treated over 4000 animals, including many dogs, goats, sheep, cats, pigs, cows, horses, donkeys and domestic fowl. In the photo above, Kenny, 10, said his dog Vito had “been sick for a long time, but I don’t know any vets and don’t have money.” ARCH gave Vito antibiotics and vitamins and will check the dog’s progress… Photos: IFAW/WSPA for ARCH

Animal groups pledge $1.1M dollars for long-term animal aid in Haiti 3/4/10 — Animal Relief Coalition Of Haiti (ARCH) announced a $1.1 million agreement with the Haitian government to improve and repair animal welfare conditions in the aftermath of January’s ruinous earthquake. Over 20 animal protection groups worldwide, including Kinship Circle, formed ARCH under joint leadership of World Society For Protection of Animals and International Fund For Animal Welfare. The ambitious long-term plan covers:

* DISEASE PREVENTION NETWORK: To protect people and animals from disease outbreaks, a laboratory and staff will carry out targeted vaccination campaigns for Rabies, Anthrax and other diseases.

* VETERINARY TRAINING: Our goal is to train at least 200 Haitian veterinarians and vet technicians for current/future animal welfare issues.

* VACCINATION COLD STORAGE: A “cold chain” is crucial to keep vaccinations fresh and stable through delivery.

* ANIMAL POPULATION STUDIES: Haiti’s animal demographics have changed dramatically due to recent disasters. Updated data is vital to reach animals.

Kinship Circle - 2010-03-09 - Hope Has Wheel - Animal Aid in Haiti 02

Kinship Circle - 2010-03-09 - Hope Has Wheel - Animal Aid in Haiti 03

ARCH’s mobile vet clinic makes rounds to underserved areas such as Pelerin where Haitians line-up to have animals vaccinated. According to the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture, there are some 5 million farmed animals in Haiti (not including domestic fowl), and about 500,000 dogs in Port-au-Prince.

Why Haiti’s animals, when animals everywhere need help? Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid made a promise to help Haiti’s animals after one of the most devastating earthquakes in modern times. ARCH’s enduring plan to coordinate veterinarians, clinics, vaccines…gives these animals a chance in future disasters and daily survival.

CHILE EARTHQUAKE / DISASTER OVERVIEW
- 2/27/10: Magnitude 8.8 – OFFSHORE MAULE, CHILE
- MAIN AFFECTED REGIONS:
60 miles NNW of Chillan, Chile
65 miles WSW of Talca, Chile
70 miles NNE of Concepcion, Chile
200 miles SW of Santiago, Chile

- (AP) 3/4/10: The magnitude-8.8 quake and tsunami that followed ravaged a 700-kilometer (435-mile) stretch of Chile’s Pacific coast and killed at least 802 people. People missing, unknown. People affected, 2 million.

- Chile has asked other countries and the UN for temporary bridges, field hospitals, satellite phones, electric generators, water purification systems, field kitchens and dialysis centers.

- (guardian.co.uk) 2/27/10: The 22-mile deep earthquake caused buildings to collapse, fires to erupt, and unleashed a tsunami across the Pacific. It devastated the city of Concepcion, 70 miles from the epicentre.

- “This quake was around 500 times the magnitude of the one that devastated Haiti in Jan.,” but it was deeper and Chile’s buildings are sturdier, so there were less casualties.

- Powerful aftershocks: There were 29 of magnitude 5 or greater, and one reaching 6.9, the US Geological Survey reported.

The impact on animals is becoming clearer, as we now have information from several of our member societies in affected regions… A center run by our member society, Centro de Rehabilitacion y Rescate de Primates (CRRP) that provides shelter for 165 mistreated primates has been damaged too. CRRP staff said that one of the monkeys has died and others are much stressed… Some animal shelters run by non-member societies are also reportedly seriously damaged. Many dogs have been left homeless, and there are reports of animals roaming around towns…. Flights into Chile are very limited. We now have confirmed tickets, to fly directly to Santiago, on Sunday night…

IFAW Emergency Team on Alert — A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck near the city of Concepcion, Chile… More than 2 million people are displaced, wounded or otherwise affected… Shortly after the earthquake, IFAW reached out to our friends at animal protection groups in Chile to assess the needs of animal victims. We are standing ready to provide emergency grants or whatever else is appropriate during these difficult times.

Long after ARCH leaves, its work will serve Haiti’s animals and people. Kinship Circle and other global animal protection groups in ARCH have pledged time, money and/or volunteers to stay in Haiti to:

- Setup a mobile veterinary clinic for Port au Prince and rural communities.
- Support and implement training of veterinarians and animal health technicians.
- Create a refrigeration system to keep a “cold chain” for storage/distribution of medicines.
- Design public awareness/education campaigns in Haiti and Creole.
- Vaccinate 3 million chickens for Newcastle disease and 2 million for Charcoal disease…
- Activate a Vaccination Preventive Care Program for many more diseases and species.
- Treat 3 million animals (anyone with a hoof!)…

They’re there. Haiti’s dogs (and other animals). These commonly taunted street dogs were timid pre-quake, but are now emerging in some press photos. Kinship Circle is working round the clock with other animal protection organizations to get resources to them. There are many challenges…the scale of human tragedy, lack of security, limited access…

One obstacle we can overcome is lack of funding. Please help us ensure these animals get aid. We’ve been informed that packs of dogs have been spotted. We have expert volunteers on standby…but don’t have funds to cover the work we’ve undertaken.

We’ve pledged our time, people, and resources to Haiti animal relief. Can you help us raise funds quickly?

Kinship Circle - 2010-01-15 - Haiti's Animals - We Hear Their Cries, Help Is Coming 02

A collage of pre-2010 quake photos compiled by Kinship Circle. The photo on the left depicts a goat, part of World Concern’s Haitian “gift a goat” program. The photo on left shows a stray Haitian dog, and is taken from the website The Dogs of Haiti.
——————————

January 12, 2010 changed everything for the small Caribbean nation of Haiti. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake collided with its capital, Port-au-Prince. Human casualties are already estimated in the tens of thousands, as the cries of people trapped beneath concrete begin to fade.

Task forces and troops are assembling worldwide to aid Haiti’s human victims. But Kinship Circle followers also want to know about the animals. The breadth of destruction in this disaster has been compared to Katrina. Still, animal repercussions are different.

As many as 5 million farm animals (primarily goats and a lot of chickens!) and native wild animals need help. A mostly homeless dog population, struggling to survive before the earthquake, needs comforting hands. In fact an unknown number of “community” cats and dogs await relief.

There cannot be a dedicated animal presence on the ground until the human crisis is more stabilized. However, Kinship Circle is contributing funding and volunteer support to the coalition right now.

Please help us help Haiti’s forgotten ones…
We’ve already made an initial pledge. Can you help us raise funds quickly?

NO ANIMAL GROUPS ON GROUND, BUT ASSESSMENTS UNDERWAY

At this time, Kinship Circle is not providing back-up volunteers for any animal emergency response group. However, we are watching and reporting which groups go where — so you can support animal efforts in Haiti via donations and stay informed about the plight of animal victims.

The earthquake hit on 1/12/10, so animal responders cannot gain clearance until humanitarian efforts are fully underway. Fortunately, first responders from China, Spain, France, the United States…are mobilizing teams to aid the financially strapped Haitian government. Right now, food, sanitary water, shelter and medical care are critical for human survivors.

INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR ANIMAL WELFARE (IFAW)

Haiti Earthquake: IFAW Emergency Team on Alert — IFAW’s Emergency Relief team is on high alert to help in Haiti after a devastating earthquake struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12. As always with disasters like this, the humanitarian rescue efforts will be the focus in the first week or so… After immediate human needs are met, IFAW’s Emergency Response team will be ready to assist the animal victims in any way that we can.

WORLD SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS (WSPA)

WSPA Animals In Disasters Blog — Since this morning, we have been in talks with the United Nations (under serious stress themselves since their office in Port-au-Prince has collapsed, with 15 staff members dead and 20 still missing) and the local Red Cross Chapters to gain a further understanding of the impact on animals caught up in the situation.

Our Disaster Liaison Officer from Panama, Jorge Alcidez Gonzalez who also works as the Head of the K9 unit of Civil Defence, is now travelling out of Panama with a team of specially trained veterinary staff to assess the destruction and welfare needs of the animals. Jorge and his brave team…will carry veterinary supplies to treat any injured animals that they come across. I’ve also arranged for him to feedback the extent of damage and where we can be of most help, as quickly as possible…

HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE U.S. (HSUS) & HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL (HSI)

Monitoring Disaster in Haiti — Humane Society International and The Humane Society of the United States are working with other animal welfare and humanitarian organizations to determine how best to assist animals and people affected by the disaster. We have offered our support in providing care to affected animals and will post updates as they become available.

====================

1. Six Countries Hit, Millions Displaced In Asia-Pacific

A convergence of natural disasters has left millions of people in distress across Asia and the Pacific. Since 9/26/09, a total of six countries have been hit by flooding, a typhoon, a tsunami and earthquakes.

PHILIPPINES: TROPICAL STORM ONDOY

- Worst flooding in 40 years. Parts of Manila under six feet of water.

- Hundreds of thousands of people in evacuation centers.

- The Philippines — along with Viet Nam, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Cambodia — are also bracing for Tropical Storm Parma.

- Government of the Philippines is soliciting international aid.

INDONESIA: EARHQUAKES

- In Western Sumatra, Indonesia, a 9/30/09 earthquake of 7.6 magnitude.

- On 10/1/09, a second, slightly smaller quake.

- Hundreds dead. Number expected to rise as bodies removed from rubble.

- Tens of thousands have been displaced.

- Indonesian Government has issued a request for international aid.

SAMOA AND TONGA: TSUNAMI

- Massive underwater earthquake in South Pacific triggered a series of tsunamis that swept coastal villages in Samoan Islands.

- On some islands, all medical facilities lost along with water supplies.

ON THE GROUND 9/30/09: Battered by Typhoon Ketsana on 9/26/09, the Philippine capital Manila has suffered massive flooding, with over 200 deaths and displacement of thousands of people and animals. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is racing to help, while struggling themselves… After two days trapped inside without food, PAWS directors Heidi Guzon and Gwen Protasio, and 60 animals under their care, made it to safety. The head of PAWS Disaster Relief Team, May Felix, lost one of her own dogs when flash floods hit her house… The PAWS shelter is functioning without electricity as an evacuation centre for animals. Since PAWS is very close to Marikina, where thousands are stranded with animals — tents, cages, cat/dog food and batteries are urgently needed for rescued animals.

9/28/09, PARC (Philippines Animals Welfare Society Shelter): PARC and its shelter animals remain safe from the floods caused by Typhoon Ondoy. Surrounding areas are not so lucky… PARC is opening its doors to dog and cat evacuees of the floods… Some of our volunteers are still stranded in their homes. We ask for your prayers for them.

10/2/09 REPORT FROM MICHAEL BOOTH, IFAW ER RESPONDER and communications officer in Philippines: After Typhoon Ketsana (aka Ondoy) flooded huge areas of Manila and surrounding districts, International Fund for Animal Welfare arrived in Manila at 3:50am on Oct. 1, 2009. Following meetings (with Animal Welfare Coalition and Dept. of Agriculture), IFAW’s team split to reach mud-covered Marikina and underwater Pasig. I headed for the water with Best Friends Rapid Response manager Rich Crook, who joined IFAW.

We teamed up with PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society)…and after coordination with Philippine Army, Navy and Military officials, we left in military trucks, then by boat and on foot to areas chest-high in water. That first day we helped many struggling animals by supplying food, water and Medication. Two came back with us for extended care at the animal shelter.

Kinship Circle - 2009-10-03 - Asia-Pacific Tsunami, Earthquakes 08

(PHOTO: IFAW) On 10/2/09 we rescued stranded dogs on rooftops or mud-bogged islands and continued our assessment of rural areas. Still, challenging moments lay ahead. As I write, Typhoon Parma is making landfall in the North. On its heels another potential super-cyclone is headed this way…

INDONESIA: We’re saddened by the loss of life in the Indonesia earthquake. [Best Friends has] been in contact with ProFauna Indonesia, and they’ll do everything possible to help animals. However, it’s a logistically difficult situation. Padang, in Sumatra where the earthquake struck, lies 400 miles to the west of Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. Travel to that region is complicated by earthquake damage itself and the congestion of relief teams. Please keep animals in Sumatra in your thoughts and prayers.

WSPA USA, 800-883-9772, www.wspa-usa.org
Lincoln Plaza, 89 South Street, Ste 201 / Boston, MA 02111

WPSA has deployed three veterinarian-led Disaster Assessment and Response Teams (DART) to bring aid to the thousands of animal victims left helpless after tragedy struck the Philippines, Samoa and Indonesia.

THE PHILIPPINES: Ravaged by recent storms, the Philippines now braces for Cyclone Parma — expected to hit as either a category 4 or 5 (super-cyclone) storm. WSPA is working with our member society PAWS to provide emergency shelter, food and care for thousands of companion animals left homeless.

SAMOA: After a deadly tsunami wiped out entire villages and killed more than 100 people WSPA deployed a DART to the islands. Led by Disaster Management Veterinarian Dr. Juan Carlos Murillo, the team will ascertain the tsunami’s impact on the island’s animals as well as treat animal victims.

INDONESIA: Two powerful earthquakes rippled across the island of Sumatra, creating widespread destruction. WSPA has deployed a DART to assess animal welfare needs; we hope to have a clearer picture in the coming days.

SUMMARY 9/24/09: From Janice Riccio, Quietzsch [at] aol.com
Due to the massive flooding in the Atlanta area, and specifically Cobb County, many people displaced by floodwaters left their pets with Cobb County Animal Control. The shelter was slammed before the floods, so they had no room to house newcomers. They were desperate to find rescue for dogs already housed there or face euthanasia…

I’ve taken in 9 dogs and have no place to house them, other then boarding at two vet offices. This is very temporary, and although the vets have generously boarded the dogs at a discount, this will add up quickly — not to mention the other costs for rabies vaccines, altering, etc.

BEAR is a super sweet 3 year old chow/shepherd mix girl. Shelter staff say she is good with kids and pets and is leash trained. Her bottom is all in a wiggle when you pet her.

MAC is a 3 year old, unaltered male collie mix. He is so much cuter in person! He arrived with a flea allergy, since treated. He’s bathed and his fur is growing back nicely.

BIG RED is a fantastic dog! He is a young retriever mix who follows commands, is leash trained, and loves to play ball.

Poor ELLIE… Such a beautiful and sweet 4 year old girl whose family could no longer keep her. She is spayed, leash trained and housetrained.

BALENTINO is an adorable 3 year old boy. His family was unable to keep him, though he did everything right. He is housetrained, leash trained, good with kids and pets, and very well behaved.

Kinship Circle - 2009-09-25 - Cobb County Dogs Need Rescue 02

BARNEY is such a cute little Chihuahua mix who is 4 years old, and 15 lbs. He came to the shelter with his buddy Fred.

FRED is Barney’s sidekick. He is 4 years old and 13 lbs. You couldn’t go wrong with these 2 lovebugs.

KRISTY is a 5 month old golden mix puppy. She won’t be too big when she grows up…she is only 18 lbs. now and so sweet! We likely have rescue placement or a potential adopter for her.

LEAH is a super sweet 3 year old girl, maybe basset/lab? She is spayed, house and leash trained. The shelter says she is good with kids and pets. She was adopted a couple of months ago, but the family decided their lifestyle was too active for a pet so they dumped her back in doggy jail.

3. ALABAMA: Various shelters in affected areas
4. MISSISSIPPI: Various shelters in affected areas

As of Monday, 9/21/09, Kinship Circle has monitored floods across the Southeast U.S., in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Kentucky and Mississippi. Our small volunteer staff has contacted various agencies on the ground to offer support from our network of independently trained responders. There has been no direct call (as of 9/24/09) for out-of-state volunteers, but rescuers are needed to pull from flood-overcrowded shelters.

Rivers crested above flood levels in stricken areas, but most waters are receding. Below is a brief report. We’ll update you if circumstances change.

Kinship Circle - 2009-09-02 Animals In California Fires 01

LT: Pigs get a drink at the evac site.

Kinship Circle - 2009-09-02 Animals In California Fires 02

RT: Animals rest at their evacuation center near Palmdale, Calif.

“Acton, CA. Apr. 29, 2009. Lorri Houston, Exec. Director of Animal Acres, a 26 acres farm animal sanctuary that strives to provide farm animals welfare and affection. They have taken no precautions and still have tours of school kids and visitors doing hands-on petting of pigs and other animals. A 1 month old piglet in the sanctuary on Apr. 29, 2009.”

Farm animals evacuated because of Station fire.

ON THE GROUND: SITUATION CONTAINED. STANDBY VOLS NEEDED FOR RETURN TRANSPORT.

Frank Allen, Animal Acres’ manager, tells Kinship Circle all animals are safely evacuated to one site. Volunteers will be needed when time to transport animals back to Animals Acres — a task that may be more difficult than the evacuation itself, since everyone is spread out.

Frank will not risk moving animals until the fires are 95% contained and out of the area. As in any crisis situation, we ask for your patience and flexibility…as circumstances can change in a heartbeat.

UPDATE FROM ANIMAL ACRES FOUNDER LORRI HOUSTON:

“We are safe and all animals have been relocated… The past two days, volunteers have installed wire lines directly to the animal enclosures, constructed additional pen areas, and moved cleaning, health care, and feed supplies and equipment to the evacuation site — as it now appears that the sanctuary animals will not be able to return until September 15 or later.“

Animal Acres needs $$ for construction of shade shelters and automatic waters, as animals will be at the evac site awhile in high temperatures.

Wildlife Waystation evacuates exotic animals from Little Tujunga Canyon

ON THE GROUND:

Wildlife Waystation tells Kinship Circle they’re doing fine — except for a continuing need for LARGE, STURDY CAGES for lions, tigers, bears. They also need monetary donations to sustain animals during the evacuation and return transport. Wildlife Waystation, in Little Tujunga Canyon, is a 160-acre home to over 400 animals, including tigers, lions, bears, chimpanzees.

Contrary to alerts circulating the internet, Wildlife Waystation reports:

“All of our animals are safe. Although the fire is dangerously close, we are fully staffed. Emergency crews have worked around the clock to preserve our safety.” Spokesperson Jerry Brown says they have personnel, trucks and trailers to evacuate — the most pressing needs now are funds and the giant-sized transport crates needed to move the remaining big cats.

Shambala’s resident lions, tigers and other animals are (hopefully) staying put. LA Times Blogs says Chris Gallucci, Shambala’s vice president of operations, told colleagues at L.A. Now that the sanctuary staff “have everything to fight fires on this property” and that they perform elaborate fire drills every six weeks to ready themselves for an event like the Station fire. The preserve has dozens of steel evacuation crates if 64 big cats need to be moved. It also has a 22,000-gallon water tank, a lake and a complete fire road around the 80-acre site, Gallucci said…

Kinship Circle: Louisiana Vet Marcy Miranov “Kills Without Cause”
September 7th, 2009 10:47 am by Kelly G.

I’m a little late in forwarding this alert from Kinship Circle, and in the interim, there’s been a development in the case. Not surprisingly, it hasn’t resulted in justice for the animals killed by veterinarian Marcy Miranov (and Dr. John Edwards, as well).

Reports The Times-Picayune:

Raw emotions and poor record-keeping triggered whirling accusations of animal cruelty at Jefferson Parish’s animal shelters, according to the results of an independent study released today.

But no laws were broken when 51 cats and dogs were euthanized on Aug. 13 at the parish’s Elmwood facility, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals discovered. [...]

“Our report is not a glowing report about what’s going on in interoperation,” said Ana Zorrilla, chief executive officer of the state SPCA. “We certainly hope that it’s well received and we certainly hope that the public reads parts and pieces of it, that it’s really seen as an opportunity to improve those operations, not just as criticism or critique of what’s been going on there.”

The SPCA’s representatives worked in an atmosphere already emotionally charged by the abrupt resignation of the shelters’ director, Lee Ann Matherne. She quit the day before the animals were put down.

The most glaring problem appeared to be shoddy record-keeping and lackluster policy management, Zorrilla said. The shelters have four different written policies governing euthanasia. Each one says a different set of people need to approve each procedure.

As far as the SPCA could tell, none of them were being followed. But since none were being implemented, no policies were broken, Zorrilla said.

The SPCA report, however, dispelled several rumors that arose from that incident. Dr. Marci Miranov, the parish’s senior veterinarian in Marrero, had clearance to work at the Elmwood shelter, Zorrilla said. Her colleague, Dr. John Edwards, did not stop her from euthanizing the animals on Aug. 13, as some animal activists suspected. Rather, he assisted her in her work.

The cats put down that day had been sedated, Zorrilla said, contrary to reports that Miranov was lethally injecting the animals without killing the pain first.

The report also found the number of animals put down that day were average. Euthanasia sessions don’t occur daily, which accounts for larger numbers when one is conducted, officials said.

Zorrilla did say that the SPCA found that some of the animals killed that day were adoptable.

“Some were sick, some were feral, but some were strictly space conditions,” she said.

Parish President Aaron Broussard said he would be asking the Parish Council to enact several ordinances Wednesday that would go a long way to cleaning up the poor conditions at the shelters. Broussard has asked that the parish hire the American SPCA to take over the shelters for 90 days, that his administration begin searching for an outside group that could permanently run the facilities and that he enter negotiations to transfer the Marrero shelter to a new site – a former West Jefferson Medical Center clinic near the Oakwood Mall.

(Background here.)

If you choose to act on this alert, please take the SPCA’s findings and recommendations into account. In addition to turning control of the parish shelters over to an outside organization, please urge Jefferson Parish to work in concert with local animal rescue organizations in order to make NOLA a no-kill city. By “no-kill,” I mean truly no-kill – this goes for “feral” and “less adoptable” cats and dogs, too. While shelters may not have the time or resources to rehab animals with medical or behavioral problems, some rescue groups do; some even specialize in these cases.

Whether any human law was violated or not, this slaughter needn’t have happened. Judging from ARNO’s comments, little-to-no effort was made to place these animals in rescue groups prior to killing them – and this is simply unacceptable.

8/28/09: Jefferson Parrish, Louisiana Vet Kills Without Cause

ALERT WRITER: Charlotte Bass Lilly, executive director, ARNO
table25 [at] bellsouth.net, 504-522-0222, www.animalrescueneworleans.org

BACKGROUND: [EDITED FOR LENGTH]

Charlotte Bass Lilly, ARNO, writes: [August 14] between 6am and 9am, Dr. Marcy Miranov, Westbank Jefferson Parish shelter contract veterinarian, traveled to to the Eastbank shelter and took 18 dogs out of the adoptable kennels, some of whom had been adopted and awaited pickup. In addition she took the entire population of cat ISO, 13-15 cats and kittens, and euthanized all by lethal IV injection (with NO pre-sedation).

WHY? There were 12 empty kennels in stray hold, as well as open small kennels. Many [killed] were highly adoptable small and medium dogs, i.e. jack russell, min pin, boston terrier mix, chi mix… I can figure no reason why any doctor of veterinary medicine would do such a thing.

I understand that Dr. Miranov’s contract does not authorize her to be at the Eastbank shelter, except in a medical emergency. No one okayed the killings, but the kennel manager and staff stood by quietly — perhaps afraid after the unexpected firing of Leeann Matherne, past director of Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter Division. The slaughter continued until Eastbank veterinarian, Dr. John Edwards, arrived at 9am. He was horrified…

Some Jefferson Parish adoptables…

PLAYING POLITICS WITH ANIMALS’ LIVES?

Dr. Miranov had recently reported to the DEA that Ms. Matherne was stealing drugs for resale. DEA found no drugs missing…Matherne was drug tested and passed. The “drug rumors” arose as retaliation after Dr. Miranov was terminated by Matherne (but somehow kept her job). This stirs questions about Jeff Parish authorities. Why was Dr. Miranov allowed to return? Whose agenda did this suit? Certainly not those with animal welfare in mind…

[ARNO's] relationship with Jefferson Parish shelters, as well as municipal shelters in a five parish area, is well-known among rescuers. ARNO has supplied wet cat food pallets to encourage volunteer TNR efforts. We’ve sent donated pallets of quality canned dog and kitten food… We’ve taken dogs, cats, and kittens considered unadoptable due to health/behavioral issues older age… Our role in helping these shelter animals is purposefully done to work together towards a no-kill community. Events like [needless slaughter] send this shelter, and Jefferson Parish, reeling into the past…

TAKE ACTION:

Charlotte Bass Lilly, ARNO, writes: I urge you to call, fax or write. The horror of this occurrence should result in Dr. Miranov —

1. Losing her license to practice veterinary medicine, as she has violated her oath;
2. Charges and prosecution for 33 cases of animal cruelty/abuse;
3. Termination of her contract to serve the parish in any capacity; and
4. Reinstatement of Leeann Matherne as Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter Division director.

EYEWITNESS TO THE FIRES — VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

2/12/09, Katie, Lake Nagambie – Victoria, Australia, beachside64 [at] optusnet.com.au — It feels like the whole of Victoria is up in flames. We expect [human] fatalities to climb over 300 when they get around to more isolated areas. [It is estimated] well over 1 million wild and domestic animals have perished… Animals lucky enough to be rescued will need months of care and rehabilitation. There are still 31 fires burning…

The Help for Wildlife response team — based in the vicinity where Kinglake/Healesville fires occurred — are on standby to enter fire grounds when safe to rescue injured wildlife. They already have a number of animals in care and are expecting many more. Kangaroos and wallabies found in abundance in this area can take months to recover and require a great deal of dressings and medication.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR ANIMALS:

silverzine cream / non-stick dressings
soft bandages / vet wrap
saline / disinfectant/clorhexidine
syringes / pain relief / antibiotics
feed / hay (for starving wildlife)
Donations for fuel (to carry out the extensive search and rescue)

6. Wildlife Burning

2/12/09, Animals fall victim to Australian fire

FULL STORY: newsok.com/animals-fall-victim-to-australian-fire/article/3345273

SYDNEY — Wildlife rescue officials worked frantically to help the animals that made it through Australia’s worst-ever wildfires, but they said millions of animals likely perished in the inferno. Hundreds of burned, stressed and dehydrated animals — including kangaroos, koalas, lizards and birds — already have arrived at shelters across the scorched region. Rescuers have doled out antibiotics, pain relievers and fluids to the critters in a bid to keep them comfortable, but some of the severely injured were euthanized to spare any more suffering.

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) has sent an emergency relief team to help wild and domestic animals affected by the devastating fires in Victoria. Tania Duratovic is leading the IFAW team in Whittlesea. We arrived in Whittlesea (2/9/09) and set up in the staging area…

Today we traveled to Kinglake West and Kinglake Central – two of the worst hit areas. Remnants of trees and piles of rubble are all that is left of what used to people’s homes and indeed whole towns. People are happy…to see something emerge alive from the devastation. As one person recounted as they handed over a slightly burned ring-tailed possum, “We have lost our house, our neighbours and our pets but we found this little guy alive — please help him, I just want him to live.”

Kinship Circle - 2009-02-13 - Victoria Burning 07

IFAW vet Dr. Howard Ralph administered first aid and the possum is now under the care of Help for Wildlife volunteers. Dr. Ralph, is a renowned vet, burns specialist and human doctor. He is helping local vets treat pets at the survivors’ shelter in Whittlesea. Photo © IFAW / M. Fillinger

So far we have been able to provide immediate aid to many animals suffering from the effects of the fire including dogs, cats, horses, ducks, chickens, wallabies, possums, kangaroos, joeys, koalas, a peacock, a lyrebird, a goat, a dingo and an orphaned baby deer…

SYDNEY — A bond between two burned koalas rescued from Australia’s deadliest wildfires has provided some heart-warming relief after days of devastation and the loss of more than 180 lives and possibly millions of animals. The story of the koalas emerged after volunteer firefighter David Tree used a mobile phone to photograph and film the rescue of the bewildered female, since nicknamed Sam, that was found cowering in a burned-out forest at Mirboo North, 90 miles southeast of Melbourne.

Kinship Circle - 2009-02-13 - Victoria Burning 09

Photos and video of Tree, 44, approaching Sam while talking gently to her, and feeding her water from a plastic bottle as she put her burned claw in his cold, wet hand quickly hit YouTube, making her an Internet sensation.

But it was after reaching a wildlife shelter that Sam met and befriended another koala, nicknamed Bob, who was saved by wildlife workers two days before Sam, in Boolarra, about 110 miles from Melbourne…

Also many dogs are being abandoned in the streets by owners who can not take care of them any more due to the rough financial situation.

To help Let The Animals Live raise awareness and donations… Geler-Nasis advertising agency produced voluntarily a short video telling the need of our organization: www.letlive.org.il/english/article.php?id=193

2. Israel To Fund Medical Care For War-Injured Animals

SOURCE: 1/6/09, Ynetnews
FULL STORY: State to help fund treatment of pets hurt by rockets

www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3651173,00.html

Last week a Qassam rocket hit a house in Sderot and killed the family’s dog, which was at the building’s yard during the attack. The dog was rushed to the veterinarian for treatment, but died due to severe shrapnel injuries and massive loss of blood.

Following this incident and in light of the fact that like their human owners, pets in Israel’s south are also under the constant rocket threat, the Agriculture Ministry has decided it would help pay for the medical care of dogs and cats injured by rocket fire from Gaza.

“One of the main problems arising from the treatment of wounded animals is that the tax authorities do not consider pets as property, and therefore owners are not compensated for medical treatment of the animal,” said Dganit Ben-Dov, DVM, the Veterinary Services official in charge of enforcing the Animal Protection Law.

“This is the aspect we wish to rectify, since treatment to a wounded animal could cost thousands of shekels,” she added. According to Ben-Dov, the ministry will also consider funding treatment of street cats and dogs…

Of course, our hearts go out to all the people and animals affected and we pray that a peaceful solution will soon be reached.
