2. Kinship Circle Recognized For Its Work During Iowa Floods 2008 – This Is For You!
SOURCE: 12/2/08, Iowa Dept. Of Agriculture / Iowa Veterinary Rapid Response
Team — www.iowaagriculture.gov/AgSec/IVRRT.asp
KINSHIP CIRCLE received an official certificate of recognition for its work after the Iowa floods in June/July of 2008. Iowa’s Veterinary Rapid Response Team coordinator, Mark Shearer, had asked us to recruit/deploy volunteers to staging areas at Lee County Fairgrounds (Donnellson, Iowa) and Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City. KC also sent search and rescue trained volunteers to severely flooded Oakville, Iowa. Our volunteers even helped Farm Sanctuary “wrangle” some pigs to safety, after destroyed factory farms left pigs adrift in high waters (many died, but more than 60 left Iowa for a life of freedom at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, New York).
THIS IS FOR YOU…
Who has no money, but jumps on a plane
And taxi-cabs through southeast Iowa…
Because a dog with mange has given up hope.
And a displaced cat needs your voice.
This is for you…
Who corralled a pig twice your weight
Waded in waters to leave bowls of food
And searched for eyes lost in corners
This is for you…
Who reads every word
And networks and plans
To salvage small hearts
Overlooked in the storm
Who gives without question
And sees what others miss:
Animals, cast into chaos…
Terrified and alone
This is for you…
For every mile traveled
And every life touched.

DISCLAIMER: Kinship Circle was tasked to manage out of state volunteers in southeast Iowa. We were not authorized to do shelter setup or break down. Local animal agencies, along with several financially capable large animal organizations, oversaw the fate of unclaimed animals. We were one of a few organizations to remain on conference calls with the state through mid-July, to help coordinate rescue/foster.

Volunteer Tanya Patton cuddles a cat at Barb and Mel Bryant’s farm in Keokuk, Iowa, after the Lee County Fairgrounds shelter closed.
EXCERPT FROM “THE GREAT RIVER RESCUE” JUNE 2008: For weeks heavy rainstorms saturated Iowa and five other Midwestern states, causing rivers to rise and burst through protective levees… Iowa was the worst hit state…
Barb Bryant received an urgent late-night phone call from Iowa’s state veterinarian asking if she’d run a temporary shelter for pets displaced by flooding… The next morning Bryant, co-founder of Animal Protection League, reported for duty at the Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson.
“Since this was the first time any of us had done this type of rescue, we were fortunate to receive assistance from members of Kinship Circle, who helped set up our operation. These volunteers had done this many times. Most had worked at Katrina.”
Two trailers containing leashes, crates and food were delivered to the fairgrounds. For more than two weeks volunteers did their best, spending 12-hour days caring for about 100 cats and dogs…
Bryant recalls one man who called the fairgrounds searching for his Beagle. One had been brought in, but he wasn’t wearing identification tags. “’Go to the kennel and call out, Bud Light,’ the man said. ’If he bays at you, he’s mine,’” Bryant says. “So the volunteer yelled ‘Bud Light.’ The Beagle immediately answered. He was so happy someone knew his name.”
In early July the fairgrounds needed the facility back for the Lee County Fair, so Bryant had to find a new place for the remaining animals. That’s when her husband Mel Bryant, who’s battling his fifth bout with cancer, suggested bringing them to their 72-acre farm in Keokuk, Iowa…
After two weeks the remaining 16 pets not claimed or adopted to new homes were transferred to Kirkwood Community College — then shipped to out-of-state shelters for eventual placement…

4. I Rescued A Human Today
SOURCE: 12/4/08, From KC Board Member, Nora Marino, Ncmlegal [at] aol.com
Original message from Mary Mitschke, mmmitschke [at] msn.com
I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY…
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid.
As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.

10/28/08: Ginger’s Story – Two Time Hurricane Survivor Illuminates Flaws In Evacuation System

2005: LIFE AMID RUINS IN POST-KATRINA PLAQUEMINES PARISH
Katrina left Louisiana’s Lower Plaquemines Parish post-apocalyptic. The deserted area stretched for miles, with sprawling shrimp trawlers parked on highways, a truck in a tree, debris strewn fields. Former homes were stripped to concrete foundation blocks. It felt as desolate as the moon.
The Parish had finally let animal rescuers in — when Nanette Martin and I drove from New Orleans with dog/cat food, carriers, catchpoles… It was hard to digest what we saw. Neither of us spoke until we spotted a cluster of remarkably intact mobile homes by a roadside sign that said “Ironton.”
“First stop, Ironton,” Nanette said as I turned the bumpy corner into the debris-strewn neighborhood. We hoped we’d find something alive here… Then we saw her — a gorgeous Golden Retriever with expectant eyes, wagging away. A sparkling oasis of life amid destruction and decay. She sat by her little dogloo, near her boarded-up person’s home, tied to a tree.
We ran to her. Her tongue dropped out and she smiled… “Good dog! Good girl!” She was so thin. We could feel her bones easily, yet bowls of fresh food and water sat beside her. We saw the house was deserted, so we headed to the street where a woman greeted us. “You met Ginger!” And so we learned how a neighbor was caring for Ginger after her disabled person evacuated. People weren’t allowed to take pets with them, even the disabled. We tried to imagine what Ginger had seen and felt during the storm…the sounds, wind, darkness… It was hard not to feel fiercely protective toward her.
Each day we made the two-hour drive from New Orleans to Plaquemines Parish, we checked on Ginger. We thought about bringing Ginger to ARNO until her “mom” came home. The idea was cinched when we saw three German Shepherds, who’d also survived, bullying her. We obtained mom’s phone number… There is no other call like the one after a disaster to tell someone their animal is alive. And, yes, she sure would like it if Ginger got out of there…
Ginger’s odyssey didn’t end with ARNO. She was routed through Best Friends and then to a foster home in Southern California…until her mom returned after living in a FEMA trailer. We advised her to never leave Ginger again.
2008: HURRICANE IKE LEAVES GINGER STRANDED…AND SAVED, AGAIN
Fast forward nearly three years to September 13, 2008. From my New York City apartment, I helplessly watched reports of Hurricane Ike barreling along the Gulf Coast. I’d just returned from Louisiana for Gustav evacuations, and now Ike was there. One report said Ironton was under five feet of water.
Ginger! I rummaged through three-year-old Katrina rescue notes…and (unbelievably) found a phone number for Ginger’s mom. She picked up on the first ring. She’d evacuated for Ike, but again, wasn’t allowed to take Ginger. Incredible. But no time for that. Was Ginger tied? No.
I posted an SOS for Ginger on the web. Almost immediately, Belle Chasse resident Ramona Billot contacted Lori Wilson of Rescue Ranch. Lori had to wait another excruciating two days until rescuers were admitted into Plaquemines again. I imagined the worst…until the call came from Lori: Ginger was alive! A neighbor working on a levee identified her and agreed to care for her until her mom returned.
I called with the same good news as three years ago. Once again, the relief on the other end was palpable over the cell towers. A frail voice asked, “You have Ginger?” I can still hear her anxiety in my ears today.
Two Hurricanes. Two Evacuations.
Each Time, Ginger Was Left Behind.
Was Ginger forcibly left behind because authorities refused to let her disabled person evacuate with her? Or, were new pet evacuation rules poorly communicated — leaving elderly, rural residents without the knowledge or means to leave with their animals?
An imperfect system needs much work…so precious lives don’t slip through its cracks. But for now — despite politics, bureaucratic red tape, and really bad weather — Ginger is safe.
POSTSCRIPT
After some research, it was determined that Marie and Ginger can participate in an assisted evacuation together, through the Health Department Superintendent. Let’s hope Ginger never again stands alone in a hurricane.

RESCUED ANIMALS PUT UP FOR ADOPTION AFTER 10 DAYS
blogs.chron.com/hurricanes/animals/
“Pet owners will have a 10-day window of time to identify and collect their animals from the date of the photo’s posting. After that point, the animals will be adopted out.”
From Marilyn Knapp Litt, stealthvolunteers [at] yahoo.com — A heartless 10-day limit — used in Texas to place Hurricane Ike animals up for adoption ONLY 10 days after rescue — meant most families weren’t contacted when animals were taken from their homes. I know of no families contacted…and in many cases no information was left in the home about where animals were taken.
My group, the Stealth Volunteers, was eager to help locate families of animals who were rescued, but could find no group that wanted our services. The emphasis was on rehoming animals rather than returning them to their homes.There has been no outcry over this and I believe it will become the accepted practice nationwide; with the exception of Louisiana which has pet evacuation legislation and an agency (LSART) determined to ensure all rescued animals are restored to their families.

2. Hope Is A Mutt Named Ranger
========================
SOURCE / REPLY TO:
Marilyn Knapp Litt, stealthvolunteers [at] yahoo.com
Swimming for his life, he endured the horror of being hit by bodies of the drowned
The family’s LOST ad read: Ranger is a 5 year old sweet, gentle, long-haired Retriever/Aussie Shep mix. He’s got brown eyes and mostly black hair with a patch of white on his chest and bits of white between his toes. He had a blue collar with a tag for his vet on it out of Bacliff, TX… We really miss him and want him to come home. (Ranger was lost in San Leon, TEXAS).
EVERYONE BUT THE SON AND RANGER LEFT BEFORE THE SURGE…
The son finished boarding up the house, put Ranger in his van and called his parents to say he was leaving because the water was coming.
But he left too late.
A wave slammed the van into a guardrail. It started to fill with water. The son managed to grab Ranger and swim out of the van. He swam with his 65 pound dog under his arm. A second huge wave came as the electricity failed.
A third wave, 12 feet high, parted them in the dark as the young man had to let go and swim for his life. Debris, alligators, and dead bodies slammed into him as he endured the horror…and struggled to survive.
And as he swam in that terrifying deadly black water, he looked for his dog. Escaping the surge, he reached safety, but alone. He found a fire truck whose crew took him to shelter.
We will never know how Ranger survived and made it to safety, but he did. He ended up at the Houston SPCA and his family saw his photo online. A family member called the SPCA and said, “You found our dog!” She provided them with the Ranger’s shelter ID number.
You would think the SPCA would be delighted at the prospect of a reunion. Reunions are rare, especially when no effort is made to contact owners, even when the animals are removed from homes.
THE HOUSTON SPCA SEEMED TO DISCOURAGE THE FAMILY’S REUNION…
“It is not your dog.” That was the immediate response. How could they know without checking? Why didn’t the family hear something like, “Wow, let’s see. I hope it is your dog!”
Here is how the exchange was described to me: “With each question, I felt they were trying harder and harder NOT to reunite him with his family. The final straw was telling me that he was about to be put up for adoption this week if he passed the personality test.”
She told the SPCA they were coming to get Ranger that day. The response was they could not promise he would be there. She begged them; “Please, as a personal favor, please hold the dog until he can be picked up.”
DISASTERS BRING OUT THE BEST AND THE WORST…
Why do some people, confronted with a stranger who has nothing, open their homes? And why do other people look down from a position of power and make them plead? Even if you have no empathy with people, how can professionals, who choose to work with animals, care so little about them?
Dogs grieve and mourn lost families. (If you don’t know this firsthand, I refer you to the literature of Jack London or Charles Dickens.)
Why would the SPCA be so eager to adopt out an animal the family is coming to claim? And if Ranger goes home…somewhere down the line, there will be shelter space for a dog that would otherwise be put to sleep? Shouldn’t that be what an organization called the “Society for the Prevention and Cruelty to Animals” is all about?
THE 10 DAYS WERE UP. NO EXCEPTIONS.
I think I know why. And it is not just the Houston SPCA. Ten days after rescue, all animals were available for adoption. (Some desirable little dogs didn’t even last 10 days). The focus of the rescue effort was to rehome saved animals. It is easier and cheaper to adopt out animals than to hold them and reunite them. Ranger’s ten days were up and that’s why the SPCA could say Ranger was not their dog. They meant, he is no longer your dog.
AGAINST ALL ODDS, A HAPPY ENDING
Surviving a hurricane makes you strong and the family went to the SPCA to get their dog and would not be denied. Ranger was so excited to see his Mom and Dad, he whined and barked and wagged until they had no choice but to admit he had found his family.
The son broke down when he heard Ranger had survived. The home he stayed to board up has vanished. The family has to start over. But now, thanks to Ranger’s improbable return, they are not starting over from scratch.
Hope is talked about a lot these days and in a conventional sense. Red or blue, you can have your own ideal of Hope. Neither party holds the copyright. But for this family, Hope is a sweet, gentle, long haired Retriever/Aussie Shep mix.

FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE
When Iowa floods saturated nearly 80% of the state this summer, Iowa’s Veterinary Response Coordinator enlisted Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid Network to staff staging areas at Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City and Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson, Iowa. By June 14, 2008 we were in daily conference calls with the state EOC (Emergency Operations Center). We contacted Best Friends Rapid Response Team and asked Iowa officials to form an agreement with them (MOU) for water rescue in Louisa, Des Moines, Lee, Johnson or Linn counties…. Over June and July, Kinship Circle volunteers traveled to Iowa for emergency pet sheltering, transport and rescue operations.

IN THE MEANTIME, PIGS WERE EVERYWHERE…Adrift from flooded hog farms, some still encased in crates. While 40,000 were pre-evacuated, an estimated 4,000 (or more) pigs died. Some who’d scrambled atop levees were shot dead by officials concerned they’d ruin sandbags. Many more drowned. Kinship Circle contacted Farm Sanctuary to ask their Emergency Rescue Team to come to Iowa. KC volunteers Cheri Deatsch, Bob Rude, David Halperin and Craig Hill assisted Farm Sanctuary in initial pig rescues. Eventually “Operation Pig” grew so large, a coalition of Farm Sanctuary, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), American Humane Association (AHA), and Animal Rescue League of Boston recovered pigs from levee systems and treated many for severe sunburn, dehydration, etc. at a triage site in Iowa.

FROM FARM SANCTUARY
More than 60 special needs pigs saved from the floods received critical care, treatments and surgeries… Safe at Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter, the first of the pregnant sows rescued from the Iowa floods have given birth! Bringing lots of little piglets into the world, the mothers, Rosebud, Mango and Mabel, are thrilled with the new arrivals…
After having the honor of knowing these sows, it is painful to think about what their lives were like at the factory farms they only narrowly escaped when the Mississippi River overflowed. But we must think about it because Mango, Rosebud, Nikki, and all the other bright, passionate, loving, and sensitive gestation sows rescued in Iowa are not anomalies in their ability to feel so deeply, and they need us to show the world what is at stake when factory farms treat sentient creatures like commodities.
FARM SANCTUARY: Rosebud, welcomed eight tiny piglets into the world! An event that lasted about 2 ½ hours, this emotional birth culminated in the safe delivery of a breech baby… The love between sows and piglets is remarkable, especially in moments piglets awaken from naps and run to reach their mothers’ faces, grunting excitedly into their ears as if to say, “thank goodness you’re still here!” One of Rosebud’s babies, Pepper, is so thrilled to see his mother that he sticks his entire nose into her ear.
One of the smallest piglets in the litter was too weak to nurse on his own. He was bottle-fed vital colostrum from his mother and then taken to a veterinary hospital for postnatal care. Meanwhile, caregivers kept vigil by Rosebud’s side, watching over her fragile babies…
Another pregnant sow, Mango, was settling into a birthing hut out in the pasture, and…she too gave birth to eight beautiful girls and boys!

PIGS AT FACTORY FARMS CANNOT MOVE
LEFT: Piglets nurse through the metal slats of a farrowing crate encasing their mother in a fixed position on her side.
RIGHT: Pregnant sows are immobilized in gestation crates.
Pigs, like dogs, are outgoing individuals who form social ties and navigate life through curious snouts. Each year roughly 100 million U.S. pigs are denied space, sunlight, straw bedding, mudbaths or any feature fundamental to pigs. At hog factories, 600-pound sows are immobilized in two-foot wide gestation crates and forcibly impregnated. After birth sows are wedged on their sides inside farrowing crates. Tiny piglets struggle to nurse through metal bars, but otherwise cannot touch their mothers.
At the November 4 elections, Californians have a history-making chance to ban cruel confinement crates that don’t let egg-laying hens, pregnant pigs or veal calves stand, lie down or turn around. Imagine spending your entire life in a single dark compartment, unable to move freely. This is how animals at intensive confinement farms live.

About Current Fires: Marek fire 20% contained
=================
DATE: 10/13/08
SOURCE: www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-fire13-2008oct13,0,4738290.story
Fire broke out early Sunday in the Angeles National Forest, destroying a house and three motor homes and prompting the evacuation of about 1,200 residents of 450 homes in the areas of Lopez and Kagel canyons, authorities said.
By Sunday night, the so-called Marek fire, named for Marek Canyon, had burned about 2,100 acres in the area north of Lake View Terrace. It was about 20% contained, officials said.
No injuries have been reported, said Sam Padilla, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman. In addition to the house and motor homes, a garage and a shed were destroyed.
Another county fire spokesman, Inspector Frank Garrido, described the fire as “stagnant” Sunday evening and said authorities were “putting a containment line around it.” But he said it was not possible to forecast when the fire would be contained fully in light of forecasts for high Santa Ana winds. “The winds could stir up hot spots and stir up this fire,” he said.
A red flag warning has been issued through Tuesday evening, meaning that winds could reach 25 mph or more and humidity could drop to 15% or lower. The fear is that wind-whipped embers could spark new fires, Padilla said.
Because “a lot of the terrain is inaccessible,” firefighters used water-dropping helicopters in an effort to “take the punch out of the fire,” said Paul Hartwell, another county fire spokesman.
The evacuation center at San Fernando High School was expected to remain open overnight. An evacuation center for the area’s many horses and other animals has been established at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in Sylmar.
The Marek fire broke out in the Angeles National Forest near Little Tujunga Road, about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, after 2 a.m.
The cause is unknown. Los Angeles County Fire Chief Mike Freeman discounted a rumor that the fire was sparked by gunfire from a nearby range.
Don and Vicky Ecker were among the residents who had evacuated to San Fernando High. They heard helicopters hovering nearby about 2:15 a.m. At 4 a.m., county sheriff’s deputies advised them to pack up.
It was scary “because we could see those flames shooting up over the canyon,” said Don Ecker, a retired Idaho police officer.
When Bill Slocum and his spouse, Brian Gavin, were awakened by their barking dog, Peyton, about 2:20 a.m., they could see a ridge of flames not far from their 12-acre property in Kagel Canyon. A couple of hours later, they grabbed a file of important papers, their two cats and Peyton and headed out.
Gavin, president of the canyon civic association, said residents recognized the fire danger and had cleared brush and set up a phone tree.
Stanton Florea of the U.S. Forest Service said the fire burned south and west in the first few hours, but after daybreak as temperatures started rising, the wind calmed and the fire moved north.
About 1,000 county, city and federal fire personnel were called out to fight the blaze. But enough progress had been made that about 200 of them were released Sunday morning.
Seven helicopters and other aircraft dropped mostly water and some retardant.
The general area is dry; the last significant rain was May 21, Florea said.
In Napa County in Northern California, a 300-acre brush fire near St. Helena that started Friday and destroyed one residence had been fully contained by Sunday morning.

UPDATE: Sgt. Gwen Beberg’s puppy, saved from a life of hardship in Iraq, could be executed by U.S. superiors. Ratchet has until early next week to be released in order to make the Operation Baghdad flight out of Iraq…
Ratchet is at Camp Striker in Iraq. Fifteen other dogs were allowed to leave with Baghdad Pups on the flight Ratchet was supposed to be on. The base’s commanding officers seized Ratchet on his way to the airport. Ratchet has had his necessary vaccinations and is healthy. Ratchet needs a military release because the military is refusing to let him leave Iraq.

SAMPLE LETTER — This letter is prepared to inform you about the issue.

===========================
Dear Minnesota Senator/Representative:
Please count my comments, along with similar messages you’ve received. I am dismayed that Sgt. Gwen Beberg — a Minnesota citizen presently deployed in the Middle East — cannot bring home her beloved Iraq puppy Ratchet.
Sgt. Beberg has remained on duty 15 months beyond her original tour due to the stop-loss policy. During that time she rescued Ratchet, a friendly mutt who became her lifeline. Naturally, Sgt. Beberg sought the aid of Baghdad Pups, an agency that negotiates clearance and transport for companion animals that U.S. soldiers “adopt” overseas.
But this story cannot end happily without your help. Ratchet now faces death at the hands of U.S. Army officers. The military seized the dog while en route to the Baghdad airport with Sgt. Beberg. An SPCA International press release claims: “Soldiers can face immediate court-marshal [for befriending animals] and some even see their animals brutally murdered by a direct gunshot to the head from commanding officers who will not bend the rules.”
This is unacceptable in the civilized world. Our Department of Defense must implement an adoption system that lets soldiers bring vetted pets back to the U.S. with them.
In the meantime, Baghdad Pups returns to Baghdad on October 15, 2008. Officials must free Ratchet before then so he can leave Iraq with Baghdad Pups. Sgt. Beberg, who leaves later in October, will be forced to abandon Ratchet to certain death if he doesn’t depart on that earlier flight.
I hope it is not too late for Ratchet and urge you to act promptly. Please do everything possible to get Ratchet on board with Baghdad Pups. Sgt. Beberg deserves a happy ending after serving her country. Anything less is extraordinarily inhumane and unjust.
Thank you,

Update, 10/19/08, via Care2:
First, the good news: thanks to pressure from folks like you, SPCA International’s Operation Baghdad Pups secured Ratchet’s release!
Then, the bad news: the military did NOT release him in time for the flight back home on Wednesday. They gave Ratchet clearance to be released just 30 minutes before SPCA International’s rescue expert, Terri Crisp, was to lift off from the Baghdad tarmac and he missed the flight. SPCA International plans to make another emergency return trip to Baghdad to rescue Ratchet as soon as Sunday.
Obviously, these flights are expensive – but every animal’s life is worth it. SPCA International’s program Operation Baghdad Pups relies entirely on the generous donations of people like you. You can donate today at www.SPCA.com to help save Ratchet and other soldiers’ animals just like him who are waiting for safe transportation to the U.S.
Equally important, we must keep the pressure on the U.S. military to ensure that Ratchet remains safe until he can be rescued. And we must and make sure the military releases all animals adopted by servicemembers so they can be brought back the U.S. to the loving homes that await them.
M.A.R.S. Safe Haven, SPCA and Operation Baghdad Pups thank you for your support.
Update, 10/20/08, via Care2:
Great news! Thanks to you and the hard work of the good folks at SPCA, Operation Baghdad Pups, M.A.R.S. Safe Haven and M.A.R.S. Productions, Ratchet, the adopted Iraqi puppy, is now on a plane en route to the United States!
Here’s the wonderful story as told by M.A.R.S. Safe Haven, the sponsors of the Clemency for Ratchet petition:
“Operation Baghdad Pups program manager, Terri Crisp, and Ratchet met at the Baghdad airport tonight and boarded a plane bound for the U.S. After SPCA International received military clearance on Wednesday, October 15, for Ratchet’s travel, the organization set this final rescue plan into action. Last week, the world got behind Ratchet and Spc. Beberg’s plight; an online petition collected over 65,000 signatures pleading for Ratchet’s release.
“Crisp and Ratchet are scheduled to arrive at Dulles International Airport in Washington, DC on Monday afternoon. Ratchet will be cleared by the Center for Disease Control and given a thorough medical evaluation by a local Virginia veterinarian. As long as Ratchet receives a clean bill of health, he will fly to his final destinations, Minneapolis, MN, on Wednesday.
“Northwest Airlines, a Minnesota base company, generously donated Ratchet and Crisp’s flights from Kuwait to Minneapolis, MN.

ANIMALS DISPLACED BY IKE FIND REFUGE AT THE DOGHOUSE:
EDITED FOR LENGTH
9/20/08, From Alice Russell, arussell48 [at] verizon.net — I opened The Doghouse boarding kennel in Galveston County last month and was just getting things rolling when Ike devastated the county. I have been at the Doghouse 12-14 hours a day since. People who evacuated will not be able to start the rebuilding process for several weeks. Last I heard Galveston will not have sewer for two months (full of sand).
Many people have dogs and/or cats but their temporary homes do not allow pets. So, I am deluged with evacuee pets who are traumatized and sick from the salt flood water and owners who cannot pay to board…
I had two on staff, Nikki lost her home and is not sure what her family will do in the interim (I have her 3 dogs). Shawna’s home suffered damage and both of her dogs are at the Doghouse. Sherri my groomer still does not have power… Her dogs are at the Doghouse, too…
One of my favorite boarders is Bogie, an old, confused, ugly and aggressive pit bull. I was not able to clean his kennel in spite of treats and sweet talking — plus he needed medical attention for wounds he got during the storm. I called his people and explained our dilemma. Sherri found a vet who agreed to squeeze him in. His people said they would take him, afraid they would have to have him put down. They called from the vet’s a few hours later and I agreed to take Bogie back if I could befriend him. When they came back, Bogie seemed to remember me or at least the treats. With the owner there I petted him, treated him and took him outside to play. By the time the owners left Bogie was my shadow. Now when I walk by his kennel he begs for all that special attention.
Bogie’s people brought pictures of their former home — the water was nearly to the ceiling during the storm. His owners spent 9 hours atop a couch steadying a table floating between them for their pets. Bogie, in the other room sloshed and beaten by debris, survived treading water for 9 hours… The rest of my motley crew includes a couple sweet mastiffs, several smiling lab and lab mixes, a labradoodle who shares her kennel with a big sweet rottie, two dobbies, 14 and 15 year old lab mixes…and lots of just plain dogs waiting for their families. The cats — Blackie, Oreo and Boo Boo — turned our backroom into the Doghouse Cattery and seem very content to keep the seats of our breakroom furniture warm for us while they wait to go home.
HELP THE DOGHOUSE STAY OPEN FOR ANIMALS DISPLACED BY IKE
People desperately need a place for their pets while they look for new homes and jobs. It’s hard for them to find the money to care for the family dog when the storm didn’t leave them a change of clothes, a roof over their head or a vehicle. I am doing all that I can but need to make at least enough to keep my doors open, the dog bowls full and pay my staff.
I’d be happy to send photos and stories of the dogs in need. Thanks for any help, directions or hints you can give me.
If you can help, or know any person or business able to support some dogs while their people get their lives back order, CONTACT:

thefacts.com/story.lasso?ewcd=fcbb6d8f2a9e86fb
9/22/08, By Katlynn Lanham, LAKE JACKSON — Pet owners who left their animals in Brazoria County during Hurricane Ike are having a hard time relocating them, officials with the Brazoria County SPCA said. The Southern Brazoria County Animal Shelter, which is operated by the SPCA, re-opened Wednesday, allowing residents to begin looking for their lost animals, said Christian Ramsey, executive director of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Brazoria County.
“One dog was found floating on a piece of wood in a marina,” shelter -employee Joleen Cox said. “Luckily someone found him and brought him in.” Twenty people have come by looking for their pets, Ramsey said, but only two dogs were returned to their owners.
The shelter shut down when the mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Ike was called. Ike slammed the Texas Gulf Coast, packing 110 mph winds, causing widespread coastal damage and knocking out power to almost the entire area. By Friday, many Brazoria County residents had returned home, but some were staying away until power was restored to their homes.
The animal shelter is trying to keep animals longer than normal because they know not everyone has returned from evacuation, he said. For now, they are reassess and keep them longer, Ramsey said.
The SPCA evacuated its animals to Houston on Sept. 10 in preparation for Hurricane Ike. Those animals will remain at the Houston shelter, and some already have been adopted, Ramsey said. SPCA staff was able to return last Monday and started accepting animals picked up off the streets Tuesday.
A Freeport resident called looking for a dog they had left outside on a leash, kennel manager Regina Serna said. They couldn’t find the dog. “If the storm had come more this way, that dog would be dead right now,” Ramsey said. “It is never a good idea to leave an animal behind.”

Floodwaters engulfed Denham Shelter grounds after Hurricane Gustav. Rescuers initially needed a boat to reach animals.

She was traveling back to her home to see what was left and this lost puppy made the woman happy when she held him. When I informed her the pup had no name, she suggested Rescue. He is also known as Triple-P (Piranha Puddle Puppy). Piranha from the way he scarfs down food like he hasn’t eaten for months. And watch out for your fingers!

In post-Ike Texas, large groups (such as HSUS) have reportedly invalidated the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) smaller groups (such as MuttShack) had formed with local authorities to work in Beaumont, Texas. Such alleged hostility made it increasingly difficult to obtain a realistic snapshot of the animal situation in Ike-ravaged areas. There was concern about the amount of time some large groups devoted to removing other emergency rescue groups, rather than helping animals in the field. Below is some of what we know — straightforward, without a “public relations” angle.
=====================
1. A Texan Talks About Where Animals May Need Help
=====================
EDITED FOR LENGTH
From Kathy Landry, landrymusic [at] hotmail.com — I live in Kemah, TX on Galveston Bay. My foster animals/rescues and I are OK, but home impacted — no electricity but neighbor allowing some hook up to his generator, so just got computer/TV access… Here is what I think about which specific areas most animals will have been left and suffering.
CRITICAL ANIMAL NEEDS AREAS
**BOLIVAR PENINSULA (ESPECIALLY CRYSTAL BEACH) took a 20 ft. plus storm surge. When the island started to flood 12 hrs. BEFORE Ike even arrived, the coast guard tried to evac people and pets… An hour later TV said coast guard had to stop, as weather became too dangerous. They had to leave many people (and pets). There may be MANY companion animals injured or left in houses or on streets. I don’t know how SPCA could possibly handle alone the magnitude of animal rescue in this huge Houston/Galveston affected area.
Bolivar Peninsula – Best Friends Rapid Response
Crystal Beach – Best Friends Rapid Response
FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE: It is shocking to see dogs left on short chains — from which they have no chance to escape floodwaters — bloated and dead. We agree with Best Friends’ Rich Crook that the individuals responsible for abandoning animals in a catastrophic storm should be prosecuted to the full extent under Texas animal cruelty law.
**GALVESTON ISLAND & CITY OF GALVESTON: Large areas submerged, major devastation of entire island… Heard reporter talk about a call from a woman who left 2 dogs in house, in area where houses took on 10 FEET of water. Reporters went in, dogs alive and OK (one on top of refrigerator). They fed and watered, put in backyard and called SPCA (? dogs still there). They said this was area of 57th St. and Avenue R in Galveston… There are always many strays in Galveston. Also many economically challenged people and elderly with animals. Although local officials bussed many out with pets…you know there were still animals left (people with multiple pets, etc.) There have always been many horses, cows also on the island.
*SEABROOK (my area) ON GALVESTON BAY also completely flooded. There are a lot of feral cats, and many outdoor but not feral cats who shop owners feed, etc. I live 8 blocks from Seabrook, but not allowed in, roads blocked, water just went down yesterday.
*KEMAH (across the bridge from Seabrook) also has lots of outdoor feral or semi-feral cats who hang out at restaurants and shops. Also took a lot of flooding. No one allowed in, roads blocked.
**BACLIFF (about 5-10 miles south of Kemah) ON GALVESTON BAY is a coastal area noted for a lot of animal neglect and abuse. Likely many chained dogs left behind, animals left loose, and confined in houses.
**LA PORTE (slightly north of Seabrook) had lots of wind damage, but I don’t think as much storm surge (not sure). Also MANY strays and MANY abandoned animals even when not a hurricane. The kill shelter always overfilled…
Thank you all for helping Houston/Galveston animals.

2. Can This Be True? 10 Days To Reclaim Pets…
=====================
According to the Houston Chronicle’s blog on Ike animal information:
“Rescued animals will be put up for adoption after 10 days.”
blogs.chron.com/hurricanes/animals/
“Pet owners will have a 10-day window of time to identify and collect their animals from the date of the photo’s posting. After that point, the animals will be adopted out.”
Marilyn Knapp Litt – A Stealth Volunteer in San Antonio, TX writes: Right now I am EXTREMELY concerned with the ten day time limit for Galveston residents to claim their animals. It is will result in very few residents having their animals returned. It is a Houston SPCA policy, but they do not have it anywhere on their website. I had it confirmed by one of the hotline volunteers.

4. Caught On Camera In Galveston Island
=====================
From: Texas Independent Rescuer in Kinship Circle Disaster Aid Network 9/16/08: I returned from home from Galveston Island last night. I had self-deployed to assist my blind father who lives in Alvin, Texas, about 10 miles from Galveston. Early after the storm on Saturday I took my truck and trailer and headed into town to find the local authorities were conducting their own search and rescue operations for animals. They told me to head south on Hwy 6 to assist in Galveston if I could get onto the island.
I ended up a few miles away in the towns or Santa Fe and Hitchcock, Texas where there were dead cows and other pets. Here I established a small base of operations next to the Santa Fe Police station near a bar where people where congregating. With permission of the local police I went street to street searching out pets in backyards and feeding them. After a days work and collecting a few strays, I got permission of the bar owner to leave the dogs overnight. The locals at the bar began assisting me with feeding and watering them. They asked if I had been down to Galveston yet and said those people need more help there than here.
Leaving local pets in good hands of residents, I headed south to Galveston Island. There I found the local EON and talked to the local police who directed me to the Houston SPCA and stated they were in charge of the rescue efforts for animals on the Island. How that was going to happen I never figured out. Because the Houston SPCA was already overwhelmed as I understood it. Anyway I traveled about the Island feeding dogs and cats until I ran out of food. (I should note that everywhere I went local people and lower officials commented on how great it was that someone was doing something so quick for the animals. One official stated: “About time someone got here to help the animals.”)
I made a trip over to the local Humane Society to find the building destroyed and no one nearby. As curfew fell and without communications, I chose to leave the Island. I returned to Santa Fe and made arrangements for the strays I still had a my temporary shelter… The area of devastation is so great that not even the HSUS, ASPCA, or any one organization bearing all it’s assets could handle rescue and care of the animals affected by IKE. God Bless those of you who are headed to the southeast Texas area to help. Expect to hit brick walls with the authorities… If you do go, be prepared to operate solely on your own and get permission from the local town Mayors and police departments. Expect no help from FEMA or Texas State officials.

PHOTO: Five little terrier-mix dogs were left behind on Galveston Island. Alone and frightened they watched as the storm surge rushed into their home. As the water rose, they jumped atop a table and that’s where Houston SPCA rescue teams found them whimpering. The high water mark was over their heads and our rescue teams knew in their hearts that these little dogs spent most of the night swimming for their lives. But they had a strong will to live…

HOUSTON SPCA UPDATES FROM THE FRONTLINE, 9/21/08:
Thousands of dogs, cats, horses, puppies and kittens, birds and other pets have found a safe haven at the Houston SPCA. On Saturday, we sheltered 233 animals from Galveston, took in another 149 at the temporary shelter on the Island and conducted 141 rescues. Overall, nearly 600 animals have arrived from our Island’s temporary shelter and our teams in the field have conducted over 600 rescues…

9/17/08, From Kathy Blankenship, halfwayhome [at] comcast.net — I founded Halfway Home Animal Rescue Team in January and currently foster 9 dogs and 31 cats. I live in Santa Fe, about 20 miles north of Galveston. This past weekend Hurricane Ike took off half my roof and destroyed the fence enclosing my yard. My house is inhabitable, but I have no choice but to stay there to protect and care for my animals. Without a roof or a fence, it is nearly impossible. It is critical that I find a no-kill shelter or group to take in my animals so that I can focus on caring for my family and rebuilding our home in this time of crisis. Can you please help me?

REPLY TO:
Kelle Davis, kellek-9 [at] peoplepc.com
9/18/08, Many saw the alert about hundreds of adoptable animals on death row at a Texas pound, due to fallout from Ike: Hi, my name is Kelle and I’m a shelter walker at Montgomery County Animal Shelter… Before Ike they took in many animals from shelters closer to the coast (over 200) and also had the normal owner surrenders that occur during disasters. Now, the shelters they assisted are in no shape to take the animals back. They are going to have to euthanize many, many very adoptable dogs and cats from lack of room and people to care for them. Many of us are also without electricity or running water at this point and in no position to take any more right now.
No outside rescue groups are being allowed on to Galveston and surrounding areas (HSUS is denying any other rescues to help) and maybe if your group was going to help out in the Gulf, now is an opportunity to get some dogs and cats of the storm to a safe place where they can be adopted…

9/20/08 UPDATE, From: Kelle Davis, kellek-9 [at] peoplepc.com — I believe almost all dogs and most cats got out yesterday. The media picked up on this and when I got there yesterday the parking lot was full. I took two mangy starved pups who were of course overlooked. But the shelter doesn’t need to euthanize anyone, as so many were taken in! I did pick up a golden retriever right after storm who needs a foster… She is young and I believe spayed, if interested. Very loving and dog and cat friendly.

8. Do Their Lives Matter? Cows Cling To Life In Texas
=====================
Doomed — anyway you look at it. Saving cats, dogs and other animals but who will give sanctuary to the cows? Some 4,000 cows have already been killed by Ike. More than 20,000 cattle and hundreds of horses are dying from eating and drinking salt-contaminated grass and water. The grim chore of disposing of dead livestock still looms, said Bob Hillman, executive director of the Texas Animal Health Commission. Alligators are eating some of them.
Some groups have left hay and water for the cows… One horse rescuer, Elizabeth Asher, with “Rescue Bank” knows where most stranded cows are located. The Texas Dept. Of Agriculture set up “Operation No Fences” to provide relief for horses and cows.

2. Help Feed Animals In Flooded Lafitte, Plaquemines
===========================
FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE:
Ramona Billot is a devoted rescuer who many recall managed the food/water program for animals in Katrina-devastated Plaquemines Parish. Ramona, her son, and about 14 to 16 cats (plus her son’s turtle!) recently evacuated during Hurricane Gustav. But she is back in her Belle Chasse home and once again helping animals in Ike’s treacherous path. With little presence from any animal groups in flooded Lafitte and lower Plaquemines, we urge anyone who can to donate toward food for left-behind animals.
PHOTOS: Flooded Ironton, Plaquemines Parish. Ramona writes: I am also very concerned about Lafitte, which is completely flooded. Lafitte has always been a place with lots of strays and ferals…
From: RAMONA BILLOT, ramonabillot [at] yahoo.com — I will feed animals and give out pet food to residents in Lafitte and lower Plaquemines, areas flooded by hurricane Ike. I am collecting donations of cat food, dog food, gift cards or financial donations to purchase food. Please consider donating to help animal victims of this storm.

Subject: LaFourche Parish: Volunteers/Supplies Needed Now
KINSHIP CIRCLE ANIMAL DISASTER AID NETWORK
www.kinshipcircle.org/disasters
9/15/08: Volunteers & Supplies Needed In Flooded LaFourche, LA
VOLUNTEERS CALLED TO LAFOURCHE PARISH
Kinship Circle and MuttShack volunteers are needed in LaFourche Parish, Louisiana where MuttShack has a joint MOU with LaFourche Parish, by and between La Fourche Parish Government, COLAA (the Coalition of Louisiana Animal Advocates), MuttShack Animal Rescue and Humane Society of Louisiana.
La Fourche Parish Animal Shelter was destroyed in recent storms. Animals need care now, even during cleanup and rebuilding. A main supply structure (60ft X 80ft) was ravaged as well, and cannot serve as a temporary holding area for animals until we construct a cinderblock foundation (or substitute with plastic/rubberized pallets). This marshy area is prone to flooding, even with minimal rainfall. All supplies and vaccines were ruined when power went down, but power is currently back on.
The return of residents — along with area properties and perimeter fencing wrecked in storms — promises a large influx of rescues and surrenders. Volunteers can help counsel residents and urge them to care for their own animals, as we provide kenneling, crates and food.
As an adjunct to the recovery effort, the MOU partners will try to implement a TNR and Spay/Neuter program — perhaps attracting residents with food incentives so they bring in their animals.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NOW FOR:
* Shelter care
* Animal handlers
* Construction experience**
* Admin (including organizers)
* Animal adoption and transport coordinators
* Animal transport (experience with animal care during transport)
* Runners (to pick up/deliver supplies)
**Construction experience, including: Carpentry (rough and finished), masonry (foundation), drywall, electrical, HVAC, etc.
MuttShack anticipates a Terrebonne Parish MOU shortly. When signed we’ll advise as to deployment to Terrebonne Parish Animal Control.

MuttShack responded valiantly to Hurricane Gustav, assisting Louisiana with:
* Over 120 trucks
* Trained volunteers
* Rapid Deployment Teams of Incident Command people
* Post storm rescue
* Mass care and sheltering teams
MuttShack worked with parishes throughout LA to rescue, repair and transport animals to safe locations in at least five states around the country. We worked with many partner organizations and value our associations.

Subject: Animal Evacuations In A Post-Katrina World
KINSHIP CIRCLE PRIMARY / LOUISIANA’S FIRST ANIMAL EVACUATIONS, POST-KATRINA
Dear Kinship Circle Primary,
Please except our apologies for the lack of alerts in recent weeks. We were in New Orleans from 8/27 to 9/1, assisting with animal evacuations after Hurricane Gustav. We’ve continued to manage volunteers, working with MuttShack Animal Rescue on post-Gustav issues — and are on standby to help animals in Hurricane Ike, if necessary. Gratefully, hurricane season won’t last much longer…so we can resume animal advocacy alerts! Kinship Circle
9/10/08: Hurricane Gustav – Photo Log
It was surreal. We shifted from awards mode to action mode as Hurricane Gustav loomed behind the Katrina Animal Memorial 8/29/08 in New Orleans. When Humane Society of Louisiana’s magical day ended, Kinship Circle set-up a volunteer intake table to assist MuttShack Animal Rescue for the evacuation of pets with their people. The Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) implemented a system for animal evacuations — that did not exist during Katrina. Photos courtesy of Kinship Circle.

HURRICANE GUSTAV ANIMAL EVACUATIONS
August 28-31, 2008: Kinship Circle volunteers joined other LSART partner organizations/individuals to work at pre-designated sites where people could evacuate with their animals from 12 coastal parishes.
MUTTSHACK AND KINSHIP CIRCLE
MuttShack Animal Rescue — on the ground pre-Gustav to help in many capacities — enlisted Kinship Circle to coordinate volunteers. MuttShack provided animal transport trucks and helped Parish Pickup Points (PPPs) before/during evacuations. Kinship Circle commends MuttShack for its professionalism and dedication to animals during disasters.
Volunteers associated with Kinship Circle (pre/post-Gustav) include: Cheri Deatsch, Kim Lea, Adrienne DeArmas, Kim Johnson, Robyn Urman, Teri Meier, Sandy Lynn, Kylie Shafferkoetter, Ghen Dennis, Sarah Rose, Lisa Roussel, Tracie Dawson, June Towler, Joanne Greene, Debby Osburn, Jim York, Kristy McShan, Sandi Corrado, Jeanne Develle… This list is by no means inclusive. We are grateful to ALL who committed their time and energy to the most innocent disaster victims — the animals.

===========================
This Shitzu pup reminded me so much of my Lhasa Apso Mandy, I became fast friends with her mom. Evacuees appreciated comforting words and smiles.
Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle
At PPPs, we tagged animals with numbered bands that matched wristbands worn by their people — in case they became separated, as happened to stranded animals after Katrina. After detailed paperwork, evacuees boarded buses with small animals on their laps. Large animals traveled in airline carriers on climate-controlled trucks. Animals and people went to a “Mega Shelter” in Shreveport, Louisiana, where they stayed side by side.
Animals under 15 pounds (exotics, cats, small dogs) could ride with their people on buses. We let as many of the little guys as possible evacuate on familiar laps. (I’m fairly certain some weighed over 15 pounds).
This burly New Orleans police officer (right) brought in his Shitzu and bunny rabbit, Teddy! We also registered an iguana, several birds, and some residents with eight or more cats (who mostly traveled on laps and burrowed inside carriers…so no cat photos).
First responders, such as the police officer above, evacuated their companion animals while they remained on the ground for Gustav. During intake, some evacuees recalled fur kids lost to Katrina, when officials refused to let them board buses or helicopters with their animals.
This resident was so sad to separate from his dogs, especially Ms. Prissy, he cried in our arms as we assured him they’d reunite at the shelter.

An Empty City On The Eve Of A Hurricane
===========================
5:00pm on Sunday, 8/31/08 — With Gustav imminent, we registered stragglers. Rosemarie Jarreau’s family arrived late with 10 dogs to band and register. All buses had left and a final Amtrac train waited for them at Union Station.
Rosemarie Jarreau and her son Devontay Jenkins hug their puppies at an emergency pet evacuation center before boarding the last Amtrac train to depart New Orleans, Louisiana, enroute to Memphis, Tennessee, August 31, 2008, after a mandatory evacuation was ordered ahead of Hurricane Gustav.

HOUR-54: Parish pickup points open. Volunteers report for duty.
HOUR-30: Contra-flow begins. Police control flow of traffic out of city only.
Only credentialed responders can enter.
HOUR-12: All volunteers evacuate. Can load animals until H-12
Kinship Circle’s Cheri Deatsch and Kim Lea joined Brenda and her husband Grady to help city-assisted evacuees with animals — working alongside LSU students, EARS, ARNO, LSPCA, Humane Society of Missouri. HSUS dropped by after we’d wrapped operations, to photograph some animals…

Gustav made landfall as a Grade 3 hurricane on Monday, 9/1/08. WERE ANIMALS LEFT BEHIND? There are always gaps in a first-time system. While we didn’t see the hundreds of thousands of animals who suffered after Katrina, phone calls flowed in about animals confined in homes, tethered in backyards, or seen roaming. A week after evacuations in harder-hit southeastern Louisiana animals were seen hungry, wandering…some dead. What went wrong?
Mainly, it seems, there was a communication discrepancy between Parish Emergency Planners and citizens within their communities.
At Parish Pickup Points, only volunteers registering animals asked: “Did you leave any animals behind?” It was suggested that volunteers ask people-only evacuees the same question.
Finally, the complexity of instructions regarding animal evacuations may have overwhelmed some. Animal caretakers were told to bring carriers and vaccinated animals (with veterinary papers). In fact, animals were placed in donated cardboard carriers or mesh “pet purses” to sit atop laps on buses. Larger animals traveled inside airline carriers. If some issues had been better clarified, more evacuees might have arrived with their animals.

9/7/08: Hurricane Ike Looms – Report To MuttShack Base Now
Kinship Circle Is Coordinating Volunteers For MuttShack
Help Needed At Water/Wind Wrecked Denham Springs Shelter
We still need volunteers in Denham Springs, Louisiana (where MuttShack is situated) to restore the area’s shelter. An initial 150 dogs and 250 cats required evacuation and the situation here remains dire. At least 40 cats have been transported out to a no-kill shelter in Arkansas…
Incoming Volunteers On Standby For Hurricane Ike Evacs & Aftermath:
Hurricane Ike is predicted to make landfall as early as Saturday, which means people/pet evacuations may begin Thursday of next week. MuttShack is still under agreement to provide animal transport to Mega Shelters (emergency shelters where city-assisted evacuees live alongside their animals) and staff Parish Pick-up Points.

LT PHOTO: 8/30/08, Evacuation Route: Feral Cat Consortium rescues this small lost black dog.

Southeastern Louisiana Update:
Orleans and Jefferson Parishes (New Orleans and Metaire): Gustav mostly spared New Orleans and Jefferson Parish, where local animal agencies assisted in pre/post-hurricane animal aid.
Lower Parishes – Terrebonne (Houma), St. Mary (Morgan City), Lafourche:
As of 9/5, Terrebonne (harder hit parish) does not want outsiders to feed/rescue animals and Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Dept. has even issued an arrest threat. St. Mary Parish, however, wants additional aid. Lafourche Parish is contained, with most residents back and few animals in distress.
Floodwaters are not the problem this time. Displaced dogs and cats are. The need food and water. Many returning residents would feed cats if food were donated. Most want dogs rescued from the streets — not euthanized.
Volunteers Needed In Southeastern Louisiana To:
1. CONTACT MEDIA ABOUT GAPS IN THE LSART (Louisiana State Animal Response Team) SYSTEM IN SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA.
LSART managers seemed unable to assess storm impact within their parishes four days post-Gustav. Residents were gone and most left animals behind. The system broke down when authorities themselves evacuated, with no electricity, internet… Media attention may correct the fallacy that all animals evacuated safely with no emergencies in southeastern Louisiana.
2. TRANSPORT LEFT-BEHIND ANIMALS OUT OF MORGAN CITY.
With no animal shelter and just one animal warden, animals — like the sweet, elderly boxer the Morgan City sheriff’s dept. asked us to take — we need drivers + a place willing to accept a small number of dogs.
3. SEEK FOOD DONATIONS + FEED LEFT-BEHIND ANIMALS.
People are needed to coordinate cat/dog food donations. We also want volunteers to comb St. Mary Parish streets (in coordination with local sheriff deputies) to determine where people require pet food drop-offs.

ARNO AFTER HURRICANE GUSTAV
We are safe — but no electricity and spotty communication. Cell phone networks work intermittently. We do have water and hope to have power soon.
All animals were evacuated pre-storm. Feline residents are sheltered in Folsom and canine citizens in Shreveport, Louisiana.
On Saturday (8/30/08) ARNO assisted Louisiana SPCA with the first-ever pet/people evacuation of Orleans Parish. Despite long hours that began at 5:00am and minimal volunteers, pets and their people left together this time. More than 18,000 people boarded buses along with approximately 5,000 pets. No animal was turned away. A big thank you to all who helped.
ARNO had to quickly evacuate its own shelter. Our plan hit a snag when an evacuation vehicle malfunctioned without our mechanic on hand for repairs. Fortunately, the Jeff Parish Shelter and Louisiana SPCA helped transport our cats in an HSUS vehicle. A second vehicle moved a remaining 15 dogs and 8 cats from the Jeff Parish Shelter. A final supply truck and convoy got stuck in the city to ride out Gustav. But all animals made it out, with our cats in the caring hands of lead ARNO member Beth Schmidt in Folsom.
Devoted ARNO volunteers stayed to care for 150 cats (these guys are unbelievable), even though the supply truck never reached them. As Gustav’s feeder bans crept over the Causeway, roadways into Folsom were shut down.
These volunteers have lived without clean clothes, electricity or water since Sunday (8/31/08). Some food/water volunteers will return to feed and assist ARNO at the shelter. BUT WE NEED MORE HELP. Cats won’t move back until power is restored. Dogs require dawn-to-dusk care due to electricity loss and continued curfew. Curfews will cease once the area has full power.
ARNO’S ESTIMATED DAMAGES ARE $15,000 to $25,000
While Gustav did not ravage ARNO’s main building, the storm did damage:
– Rear outside kennel (perimeter fencing, $5k tent torn to shreds, commercial propane heaters bent like pretzels, etc.)
– Outside front TNR/isolation/cleaning area (shredded tent, ripped/splintered perimeter fencing, twisted shelving from strong winds)
– Cat breezeway area (enclosed ends destroyed, along with cooling fans)
– Our two freezers died on us…

THANK YOU!
During the 2005 storm season, tens of thousands of people helped our city in its darkest hour — when failed levees and floods stranded thousands of residents and over 50,000 companion animals. A staggering number of animals perished. The loss of life was incalculable…but we are forever indebted to small and large humane organizations, caring individuals, first responders, municipal animal control agencies, and foundations that came to our aid.

SAMPLE LETTER — This letter is prepared to inform you about the issue.

==================
25th Infantry Division Public Affairs Office; USARPAC Public Affairs Office; U.S. Department of Defense:
I am an advocate of viable research and training. Thus, I agree with medical professionals who find it unnecessary to gun down live pigs with M16A2 and M4 rifles. This drill — which occurred July 18, 2008 at U.S. Army Garrison at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii — relies upon old-fashioned animal experimentation to prepare combat medics for battlefield injuries.
Over 95% of American medical schools do not use animals in surgical training. Most Advanced Trauma Life Support courses have discarded live animal labs. The American College of Surgeons no longer recommends animal experimentation in its curriculum.
Please update Army trauma-management training to reflect modern science. I urge you to replace the maiming and killing of pigs with progressive techniques more relevant to humans.
For example, the American College of Surgeons sanctions Simulab’s TraumaMan for Advanced Trauma Life Support. The Combat Trauma Patient Simulation System “provide[s] realistic training” and has reduced trainee dropout rates from 23% to 6%, as reported the U.S. Navy publication CHIPS. Cadavers mechanically equipped to pump artificial blood through vessels can emulate live human surgery.
Overall, animal-free research cuts costs and improves skills. A timely New England Journal of Medicine article highlights the “very detailed feedback and…more subtle measurement of trainee performance” gained from virtual reality simulators. The article summarizes: Inanimate models are “safe, reproducible, portable, readily available, and…cost-effective.”
I respectfully ask the U.S. Army and Department Of Defense to evolve with the most humane and proficient technologies available. Please implement animal-free labs to instruct Army personnel in the management of critically wounded soldiers.
Thank you,

7/12/08: Next Steps: Volunteer In Future Disasters
Over the summer, Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid Network is updating its volunteer database to keep your skills and experience on file — in the event we are recruited to directly deploy responders in future disasters. (We do NOT automatically send volunteers to every disaster).
=======================
1. Please Fill Out Attached Volunteer Form!
=======================
Your filled-out form will help us contact and send volunteers more efficiently in future disasters.
1. FILL OUT THE ATTACHED FORM:

2. EMAIL IT BACK TO: kinshipcircle [at] accessus.net
3. TYPE IN SUBJECT LINE: KC ANIMAL DISASTER AID NETWORK
(If you do not type this in subject line, your form may be overlooked).
If you are reading this message as a cross-post, not directly from Kinship Circle:
1. You must subscribe to Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Network email list.
2. You may subscribe when sending back your completed form.
3. In your email, type: SUBSCRIBE to KC Animal Disaster Aid Network
NOTE: KC Animal Disaster Aid Network will always remain a news service for anyone interested in animal disaster victims, but not hands-on volunteering.
=======================
2. Next Steps: Kinship Circle Disaster Aid Network
=======================
As most on this list know, in early June Iowa EOC/State Veterinary Response recruited Kinship Circle to coordinate volunteers for Iowa flood victims. We learned a lot during our work alongside other national disaster response groups in the area… Our experience with state officials and county coordinators at Johnson County Fairgrounds and Lee County Fairgrounds was so successful — we wish to gratefully acknowledge those volunteers who brought their experience, professionalism and devotion to animals in need.
Kinship Circle’s disaster aid network continues to grow since its origins during Hurricane Katrina…
* We’re a list of INDEPENDENT VOLUNTEERS, each responsible for obtaining his/her training and certification in animal disaster aid response.
* We’ll continue to provide NEWSLETTERS to update you on animal victims in disasters and give you the means to donate money or supplies. Please note: Until our volunteer staff expands, we can’t research every disaster (although we wish we could!)
* We are currently forming an ADVISORY BOARD to enhance our disaster outreach, when/where needed. A solid volunteer database will enable this network to have a stronger presence in future disasters.

Help The Gentle Barn Update for Animals in Need
You were so generous to us before, please help us again now!
After being hit by the Santa Clarita wild fires and evacuating our 60 animals and our human family to safety, we were displaced for two weeks and then had to repair our property. In the midst of the repairs we were notified of 400 animals in Lancaster that were in need of immediate rescue. We brought food, water, shelter, blankets, vet care and volunteers to the sight in Lancaster. Once the animals were stabilized, we helped evacuate them to safety. It has been an exhausting process spaying and neutering, vaccinating, socializing, and placing all the animals that were under our care, and we are still not done.
Starting in October we would have ordinarily raised money to support us through the summer. But instead we were busy saving animals lives.
We are doing really great work, but we need your support to see it through. The 60 rescued animals that reside at The Gentle Barn need hay and feed, the puppies from the pregnant dogs in Lancaster need to be spayed and neutered right now, and the remaining dogs and cats from Lancaster need to be fed and cared for until they are placed into homes of their own.
We need your help, please send your donations and support these amazing animals. We have now begun fundraising for the fall, but we need your help to get through the summer. We are almost there, but still need you!
Please visit our website at www.gentlebarn.org to make a donation through PayPal, or send a check payable to The Gentle Barn at 26910 Sierra Highway, D-8 #318, Santa Clarita, CA 91321.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Subject: Iowa Pigs Still Need Help

I know that we recently reached out to you for help, but we are still in urgent need of funding to continue the mission to save pigs from the Midwest flood disaster.
This emergency rescue is historic, both in its mission and scope, and is expected to be one of the most expensive rescue operations Farm Sanctuary has ever undertaken. But we couldn’t turn our backs on farm animals in need; we couldn’t leave any pigs behind.
Farm Sanctuary’s emergency rescue team is continuing to work day and night on the ground in Iowa to save the pigs. The urgency of the situation is only growing, as we have now rescued 69 pigs, most of whom are in very poor condition and a number of whom are pregnant.
We need your help right now to provide emergency onsite care to the pigs and transport them out of the disaster zone, as we have secured all survivors on the Iowa levee. Given the condition, number and size of these animals, this endeavor is massive.
Right now, Farm Sanctuary’s National Shelter Director Susie Coston is onsite in Iowa providing triage care at a temporary holding facility. Here, the pigs are receiving care for third degree burns and treatment for abscesses and wounds.
We urgently need your additional gift this week for:
* Emergency onsite care and security
* A hired veterinarian, medical supplies, electrolytes, antibiotics
* Fans, hoses, kennels, fencing, shovels, rakes
* Temporary housing fees
* A series of large animal transport trailer trips from the disaster zone to our New York Shelter
Many of the farms hit by floodwaters were factory farms where breeding sows, normally confined to gestation crates, are continually impregnated to produce piglets for the pork industry. This means that a number of female pigs we have rescued are in late-term pregnancy and will soon be giving birth to babies, adding significantly to our total number of rescued pigs and making this huge-scale rescue even more challenging.
We need your additional gift today to continue this mission and bring these pigs to sanctuary, where they will be given the vital care they need to recover. Please help the pigs now with a special gift: secure2.vegsource.com/farmsanc/fs/donate_erf_pigs08_alert.html
Many of these pigs once faced a lifetime of confinement in a dark factory building, only to be brutally slaughtered for pork. Today,
they have a chance to live.
Please, help care for and transport the pigs to safety with a donation now.
Yours for the pigs,
Gene Baur
President & Co-founder

====================
THE WEEK OF JUNE 14, 2008:
Kinship Circle begins discussions with Iowa EOC/State Veterinary Response Coordinator. We are asked to coordinate volunteers in areas other than Cedar Rapids, as HSUS and UAN/EARS are already there. We contact Best Friends Rapid Response Team and ask Iowa officials to enlist them for water rescue. Iowa EOC (Emergency Operations Center) requests a certified water rescue team for “use in search and rescue operations in Louisa, Des Moines, Lee, Johnson or Linn counties as needed.”
Within days, rescue operations are underway — with Kinship Circle emergency sheltering volunteers at Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City, and Lee County Fairgrounds in Donnellson, Iowa.
FROM CHERI DEATSCH, KINSHIP CIRCLE VOLUNTEER:
Lee County Fairgrounds staging area, Donnellson, Iowa: The cats and dogs who come to Lee County are in very good condition or very poor condition. A cat brought in as one of the last rescues is covered in some sort of oily goop that mattes her entire coat from the shoulders down. Despite her terror, she’s ravenous, eating an entire can of wet food once safe in a cage.
The dogs (LEFT PHOTO) are Buddy and Stranger, lying down. Both are surrendered by an owner whose rural property was overrun by the flood waters. Both have terrible fleas, and mange. Stranger’s mange is so bad it caused him to lose most of the hair on the back half of his body. Many animals, such as a beagle (RIGHT PHOTO) are dehydrated and malnourished, but generally happy to be safe and back in a pack! (right photo: David Halperin, Kinship Circle volunteer)

6/23/08: FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE’S DAILY CONFERENCE CALLS WITH IOWA EOC:
Iowa officials report that over 10,000 acres of land has been underwater. Thousands of evacuated residents seek ways to put their lives back together. Some Oakville, IA residents go to Lee County Fairgrounds to report addresses where cats (mostly) were left during evacuations. As water levels recede, navigation by boat is treacherous. Rescue attempts move slowly. Most left-behind cats are frightened and hide by day. In accordance, rescue teams make preparations to do night search rescues…

====================
IN THE MEANTIME, PIGS ARE EVERYWHERE…
They’re adrift from flooded hog farms, some still encased in crates. While 40,000 pigs were pre-evacuated, some 4,000 die. Pigs who scramble atop levees are shot dead by officials concerned they’ll ruin sandbags. Many more drown. Early in this operation, Kinship Circle called Farm Sanctuary to ask if their Emergency Rescue Team could come to Iowa. KC volunteers assist Farm Sanctuary in initial rescues. A coalition of Farm Sanctuary, International Fund for Animal Welfare, American Humane Association, and Animal Rescue League of Boston continue to recover pigs from levee systems…
KINSHIP CIRCLE VOLS ASSIST FARM SANCTUARY IN PIG RESCUE
BOB RUDE, 6/24/08: We arrive in Oakville around 7:00 am. We check out the area and notice a couple pigs. Farm Sanctuary is there and tells us they spent the night trying to catch pigs. They managed to get three by herding them to their trailer, but had no luck after. In the meantime Dan (Farm Sanctuary) and I hear a couple pigs in the underbrush. We devise a plan and then work at catching the 2 pigs. We manage to catch 1 on that attempt…
CHERI DEATSCH, 6/24/08: First, we (Dan and Chuck from Farm Sanctuary with Bob Rude, David Halperin, and I from Kinship Circle) begin herding both pigs, who had been lying together in the forested ravine. We use red pig boards to herd them into a makeshift corral… Once in the corral, the pigs run full speed at the fencing — held up only by the five of us… It reminded me of the childhood game Red Rover, where you run at full speed and try to bust through the arms of the other kids holding hands. “Red rover, red rover, send piggy right over!”
CHERI DEATSCH: The foreground shows Ethan (Best Friends) trying to catchpole the pig, and me to the right behind the “pig board.” In the background is Dan from Farm Sanctuary. It really captures the essence of the chase… It also shows how big that pig really was. He didn’t seem that big at the time! Photo courtesy of Molly Wald, Best Friends Animal Society.
The pigs are so frantic…one manages to escape. We loop a catchpole around the other’s neck. Bob, Chuck and Dan hold the pig on the ground while Dave and I run for the largest dog carrier we can find…
The most amazing thing: The pig who escaped refuses to leave his friend and waits nearby as we load the pig into the carrier. This pig trots behind us down the length of the levee. Then, when we turn our attention to his capture, he runs off. But, he comes back! About an hour or two later, we find him standing outside the trailer where his friend is! I can’t believe his loyalty and attachment. It makes me determined to rescue him, not only to prevent him from a horrible fate, but to reunite him with this other pig to whom he is so obviously attached.
CHERI: Pigs are so exhausted after their ordeal — without food, water, and shelter for days — that once in the trailer, they immediately lay on top of each other (like they need comfort) despite ample room to spread out.
LEFT: Newly-rescued pig with badly sunburned ears. RIGHT: Coalition member comforts pig newly-arrived at the staging area. Photos courtesy of Farm Sanctuary, farmsanctuary.org/actionalerts/alert_erf_appeal08.html
CHERI DEATSCH 6/25/07: The next day we travel to the Wappello holding area to feed them. They are still so exhausted they won’t even get up when I enter the pen. Again, they’re lying on top of each other sleeping peacefully. They seem so relieved, relaxed and happy to be full and out of the sun. All of them have sunburn so bad their ears are cracked and bleeding. Farm Sanctuary people put aloe vera gel on their sunburn…
DAVID HALPERIN: When Cheri’s cell phone rings, it plays a classical melody. Momma pig’s (above) ears and head shoot right up. It’s clear she’s never heard such music…and really enjoys it. LEFT: Molly Wald, Best Friends Animal Society. RIGHT: Cheri Deatsch, with Momma
Once I feed them, they actually become playful. Momma pig, who weighs at least 300 lbs, begins tipping over the water… I can’t figure out what she is doing and get nervous because she’s a bit rambunctious. I soon learn it is because she’s making mud in the pen to lie in. So smart! (KINSHIP CIRCLE: Take a pig out of her factory-farm confinement crate. Give her straw, shade, mud…and soon she returns to her natural self: A genuine pig!)

FARM SANCTUARY NEEDS ADOPTIVE HOMES FOR PIGS FROM MIDWEST FLOOD DISASTER:
7/2/08: Farm Sanctuary’s emergency rescue team is currently on the ground in Oakville, Iowa saving pigs stranded in the Mississippi River floods and providing them with emergency care and temporary shelter… We now have 28 pigs in our custody. Many are in critical condition (suffering from injuries, pneumonia, third degree sunburns) and are receiving urgent care.
We continue to find more and more pigs still alive, surviving against all odds in fields, on levees, anywhere they can find refuge. After this tremendous demonstration of their will to live…they deserve peace and comfort in their lives. PLEASE HELP by providing an adoptive home for as many pigs as you can.
Many of the rescued pigs swam for their lives to escape deadly flood waters. They were stranded without food or water, injured, sick, frightened, and confused. These pigs need you to give them hope for the future and keep them safe from harm forever.

4. Tessa’s Reunion
====================
6/26/08: AN IOWA REUNION, BY BOB RUDE
From ruderanch [at] comcast.net — Bob Rude, Executive Director of Rude Ranch Animal Rescue, based in Harwood, MD spent a week in Lee County Iowa, working through Kinship Circle to rescue and aid the animal victims of the Midwest flooding. As he was preparing to pack up to head home on Thursday, a frantic call came in: A couple by the name of Tom Marterman and Jerri Shute were desperately trying to locate their 12 year old cat, Tessa.
Unfortunately, Tessa’s house was flooded and destroyed in Oakville. Tom and Jerri were part of the mandatory evacuation from Oakville before the flood waters hit. Tom and Jerri only had about 30 minutes to prepare to leave. They managed to get the three family dogs and their bird in the car, but Tessa got scared and ran off.
Her family ended up camping in a church parking lot while they are trying to figure out what to do. They also kept trying to find Tessa. Tom even went back into town himself in a canoe but couldn’t find her. Finally they called Lee County Fairgrounds and spoke to a volunteer from Animal Protection League of Southeast Iowa. They asked if an older cat with no tail and no teeth had come in… As luck would have it, she was there. Also luckily for Tessa, her family was along Bob’s route to get back to Maryland.
Bob met up with Tessa’s family in Louisa County. Both Tessa and her family were glad to see each other. Yesterday was Jerri’s birthday, and she said seeing Tessa alive and well was the best birthday present!

Subject: Midwest Pigs Urgently in Need of Placement
HOMES URGENTLY NEEDED FOR RESCUED PIGS – WE IMMEDIATELY NEED ADOPTIVE HOMES FOR PIGS IN ORDER TO SAVE AS MANY ANIMALS AS POSSIBLE FROM THE MIDWEST FLOOD DISASTER.
As we reported to you last week, Farm Sanctuary’s emergency rescue team is currently on the ground in Oakville, Iowa saving pigs stranded in the Mississippi River floods and providing them with emergency care and temporary shelter.
Thankfully, our efforts are proving successful as we now have 28 pigs in our custody. Many are in critical condition (suffering from injuries, pneumonia and third degree sunburns) and are receiving urgent care.
Now, as rescue efforts continue, we must quickly secure a large number of adoptive homes for pigs: www.farmsanctuary.org/rescue/adoption.html
We continue to find more and more pigs still alive, surviving against all odds in fields, on levees, anywhere they can find refuge. Pigs are extremely resourceful, intelligent animals they are fighters; they are survivors. After this tremendous demonstration of their will to live and all that they have endured, they deserve peace and comfort in their lives, as well as a chance to know that there is kindness in the world. PLEASE HELP by providing an adoptive home for as many pigs as you can.
Among those we have rescued is a brave, strong mother pig who gave birth to seven piglets within the past couple of days amidst the floods. She and her babies have survived the ordeal but this mother now needs a safe place to call home and nurture and raise her piglets.
Our need for homes is extremely urgent, as Farm Sanctuary already provides lifelong care to more than 50 pigs. We are continuing to rescue as many as we can, but our efforts can only continue with your participation in this extraordinary rescue.
Many of the rescued pigs swam for their lives to escape deadly flood waters. They were stranded without food or water, injured, sick, frightened, and confused. These pigs need you to give them hope for the future and keep them safe from harm forever.
