***MILO FOUNDATION SANCTUARY, A 283 ACRE ANIMAL SANCTUARY IN THE HEART OF MENDOCINO COUNTY, THREATENED BY FIRE. MARIN, NORTH BAY, SONOMA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN STANDBY FOR POSSIBLE EVACUATION & CARE OF 200 COMPANION ANIMALS***
STATUS: STANDBY
AS OF: 6/28/08 – 9:45PM PST
IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE CONTACT:
Lynne Tingle, Milo Foundation
Milo Marin: 415-454-MILO
cell: 510-847-7415; email: lat [at] milofoundation.org
Our sanctuary — east of Willits in Mendocino County has a wildfire approaching that is only 5% contained. We have ~200 animals there.
The area shelters and rescue sites are already filling due to the amount of displaced livestock and pets — so we need to appeal to our friends, volunteers and foster homes in the Bay Area to help! I believe we have housing opportunities for our dogs in Sonoma and surrounding areas and can house our cats or many of them at our facility in Marin — though we will need volunteers to help care for the dogs — and the cats!
Transport: If you have a big vehicle and can handle animals, we need you!
Animal Care: We have several locations where animals can go in Santa Rosa and San Rafael — we’ll need volunteers to assist with care and feeding.
Foster Care: We are looking for foster homes for the animals.
If you can help, please contact Lynne at lat [at] milofoundation.org
Let’s hope it doesn’t come to this. I will have an update at 8PM. We will need a few good folks with large vehicles to drive if possible — we do have offers from some organizations with vans, a winery with a 16′ animal trailer and others willing to help — able bodies that can handle large dogs, good sized trucks and vans equipped with crates and ready to roll north towards the Milo Sanctuary could be urgently needed in the next 24-48 hours!
Thanks, please let me know if you can help. And if you can house a dog or a few adult cats - we’ll keep a list. And volunteers in Marin and north bay to Sonoma who can help - please let me know!
Thanks again very, very much, Lynne

When Kinship Circle began working with Iowa Dept. of Agriculture/Veterinary Response to coordinate volunteers for Iowa animal flood victims — we soon learned about the pig tragedy. Hog farms had filled with water, with pigs trapped in crates and others adrift over a wide swath of southeast Iowa. As many as 40,000 pigs were evacuated. An estimated 4,000 pigs died. Still others swam for their lives in rapid waters. Some managed to hoist their bodies atop levees, only to be shot dead by officials concerned they’d destroy sandbags. Residents and officials herded some on to barges, to ferry them back to owners. Many carcasses remain as waters recede.
But pigs are smart. And some escaped to dry ground. Reports came in daily: Pigs spotted by churches, in homes, near levees, on rooftops. Early during this operation, Kinship Circle called Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, to ask if their Emergency Rescue Team could come to Iowa. Within 24 hours, they were on the road from Watkins Glen, New York to Oakville, Iowa.
On conference call with state officials, we learned that pigs currently stranded, when found, could be taken to a temporary holding area… And once in Farm Sanctuary’s custody, receive immediate care and transport to sanctuary. That’s right: sanctuary.
Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid Network volunteers have assisted Farm Sanctuary rescuers. See below, to donate to FS Emergency Rescue Fund.

6/24/08: Farm Sanctuary catches three scared and weary pigs the evening of 6/23. The next morning Kinship Circle volunteers help Farm Sanctuary rescuers lure a spooked pig from the bushes. They manage to ease him out, but the pig isn’t happy about going into an enclosure. After a bit of thrashing and some apparent pig indigestion, rescuers guide him into Farm Sanctuary’s straw-lined trailer. One pig is so relieved to finally find comfort, he burrows beneath the straw for a long nap…
A fifth pig plays “hard to get,” leading rescuers on a panicked chase through the woods before guided to safety inside Farm Sanctuary’s trailer.
6/24/08: Aerial surveillance of flooded Iowa regions shows live pigs still stranded on 16 different levee systems. Also spotted on levees: deer, pheasants, coyotes, fox… Pigs begin to show signs of severe sunburn.
6/25/08: Data and mapping for pig locations is sent to Farm Sanctuary and IFAW, also working in Iowa with FS. Many county and state agencies must provide clearance in order for rescuers to get on levees…

STRANDED PIGS NEED URGENT HELP:
Flood waters have ravaged the Midwest, and farm animals need immediate rescue! The recent flooding has hit largely agricultural areas, leaving pigs, cattle and other animals stranded.
Hundreds of factory farm pigs have been left trapped and drowning in crates, or freed only to be swept away by rapid currents…trying desperately to survive on area levees.
Farm Sanctuary dispatched a rescue team with our large animal rescue trailer last week and we are currently on the ground in Iowa and Illinois to save drowning and stranded pigs.
Farm Sanctuary is working with other organizations to transport surviving pigs to a temporary holding area, and once pigs are in our custody, Farm Sanctuary will be ensuring their immediate care and transport to sanctuary.

IOWA FLOOD PIGS IN THE NEWS:
Days in the Midwest rescuing pets, farm animals
Mr. Rude, who along with his wife, Kathy, runs Rude Ranch Animal Rescue, a small animal welfare outfit in south county, got the call June 16 from Kinship Circle, a national network of animal disaster responders, to head to Iowa to provide assistance to animals displaced by massive Midwest flooding… Working with other rescue volunteers, Mr. Rude has spent the past four days rescuing cats, dogs, pets and farm animals. One of the hairiest rescues was of a pig. “He was a challenge. Pigs don’t like being told what to do. A lot of strength and gumption, but we got it done…”
Concerns leveled over polluted floodwaters in Midwest
More carcasses may be found as hog barns dry out… “We can deal with as many (carcasses) as we have. We can bury thousands, if necessary.”
Iowa Floods Wreak Havoc on Farming Communities
One of our trips — I think it was our first trip out this morning, about 5:30 — we saw, as we were driving by, we saw the pigs, the little pink dots, all along this one barn over here. So we swung in there and, sure enough, it was just loaded with probably close to 250 to 300 pigs. After five days in the water, hundreds of pigs were dead, but others had managed to survive. The difficult, dirty and dangerous job of getting the pigs out of the highly contaminated river water began. Richard Crook, Best Friends
Iowa farmer makes a sorrowful choice
The 450 abandoned sows and 400 hogs were still alive. In hopes some might survive, Lanz opened the shed doors, giving the animals a chance of swimming to safety — despite the treacherous currents and the general unfitness of swine for swimming. When Lanz visited a patch of high ground Monday, he found roughly 30 pigs had survived.
Pigs perish on submerged farmland
With dry land miles away, a hog swims in circles near a hog enclosure while straining to survive the Iowa River floodwaters, southeast of Oakville. Many residents were forced to leave their possessions and, in some cases livestock, behind Saturday after the levee broke. Matt Ryerson/ The Hawk Eye
Deputies shoot pigs to save levee, land
Officials said they killed the pigs over worries that they would weaken the levee.
Precious pets reunited with worried owners
…Rescue workers from Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society and volunteer group Kinship Circle Animal Disaster Aid Network have picked up dozens of cats and one dog from flooded homes, barns and on top of trees in the Oakville and bottoms area…. The groups, which have been boating back and forth in the area since Tuesday, have been asked to come in by officials at the Iowa Department of Agriculture, mainly to recover stranded pets.

June 2008
Dear NAVS friend,
As you may know from recent news reports, the Midwest has been ravaged with severe rains and flooding. The NAVS Sanctuary Fund program has been reaching out to offer financial assistance to animal shelters and rescue organizations directly affected by disasters since 1998.
Today, we need your help more than ever. Please take this opportunity to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, and a helping hand to those who cannot stand on their own feet. Please make a monetary donation to the NAVS Sanctuary Fund.
Rest assured, 100% of your fully tax-deductible contribution will be used to help animals in desperate need.
If you know of an animal shelter or rescue organization that has been affected by destructive weather throughout the Midwest, please contact NAVS or call 1-800-888-6287.
Thank you for helping the most innocent victims of these storms.
Sincerely,
The National Anti-Vivisection Society

Over the weekend, American Humane’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services unit deployed to Adams County, Ill., to help animals affected by the severe flooding in the Midwest. As an area that was overwhelmed by the scope of this crisis, Adams County was in dire need of assistance.
American Humane answered the call by joining forces with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Together, we are working to find and set up emergency shelter sites for the many animals made homeless in recent days. It’s a collaboration that is allowing the county to keep as many animals as possible fed, sheltered and healthy through the duration of the crisis.
Your donation today will allow us to continue these vital operations and prepare for the inevitable next disaster. In some situations, animals’ survival instinct simply isn’t enough — they desperately need caring donors like you to make our rescue efforts possible.
American Humane Provides Grants to Shelters in Iowa
American Humane’s response in Illinois is the second wave of assistance we’ve provided to communities impacted by Midwest flooding. Last week, we reached out to overwhelmed and underfunded animal shelters in Iowa, extending $12,500 in emergency grants to those hardest hit by the disaster.
The grants are being put to immediate use, keeping hundreds of animals safe during the crisis. For example, the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center was filled with four feet of water and uninhabitable. The money from American Humane helped the facility evacuate and relocate to nearby fairgrounds.
Stay tuned for an update on our progress in Illinois. And in the meantime, please donate! Your support will fund American Humane’s ongoing relief efforts in the Midwest and ensure our readiness for future crises that put animals in harm’s way.
Our mission is to prevent cruelty, abuse, neglect and exploitation of children and animals and to assure that their interests and well-being are fully, effectively and humanely guaranteed by an aware and caring society.
American Humane is committed to the responsible stewardship of donated funds and to meeting the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness and cost effectiveness.
American Humane meets the strong, comprehensive standards of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, has been awarded the Independent Charities of America “Best In America” Seal of Approval, and has received a 3-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s leading charity evaluator.

KINSHIP CIRCLE PRIMARY – PERMISSION TO CROSS-POST
KINSHIP CIRCLE ANIMAL DISASTER AID NETWORK has been asked by the Iowa Dept. of Agriculture/Veterinary Response Coordinator to support rescue operations for Iowa animal flood victims and send volunteers where needed. If you’ve seen the expanse of Midwest floods in news coverage — you know we have our work cut out for us! We thank KC Primary subscribers for their patience during this time…as we’ve been unable to focus on other campaigns.

OAKVILLE AREA (LOUISA COUNTY) FLOOD:
6/19/08: A boat crew assessed the scope of trapped animals. About 25 animals were rescued from flooded areas and five were reunited with their families. Some residents on boats also retrieved stranded animals. Oakville animals were brought to Mediapolis Veterinary Clinic and Des Moines County Animal Shelter, in Burlington, Iowa area. Neither shelter is in overflow yet. Boat rescuers expect to leave Oakville 6/20, to set-up at Lee County Fairgrounds staging area for assessment of animal situation in southeast Iowa.

RIGHT PHOTO: A rescued cat awaits transport to a flood shelter.

One lucky dog, about 6 years old, was found in the rafters of a flooded home — where she’d crawled to escape floodwaters. At first the evacuated house appeared empty. Then the walls began to tremble a bit, as this relieved girl wagged her tail enthusiastically. “Chewy” was reunited with her family later that day, after a rescuer at the scene covered vet bills for a bleeding front paw. Considering her ordeal, Chewy’s in good shape…and happy to be back with her people.
Kinship Circle sent a PSA to Iowa TV/radio and newspapers, on behalf of Iowa Dept. of Agriculture, alerting residents to the rescue operations in Oakville and where to check for their companions. The announcement also included an Iowa hotline for residents to request rescue of animals trapped in flooded homes. We hope the publicity will lead rescuers to more animals.
6/20/08: Already this morning, six cats and a puppy are out of harm’s way. Calls continue to come in about animals stranded in flooded neighborhoods.

2. NOTES: Southeast Iowa Floods
=========================

SOUTHEAST IOWA / FORT MONTROSE, ARGYLE, KEOKUK, BURLINGTON… FLOODS:
6/20/08: Burlington, in southeast Iowa, was among the last Iowa areas to fill with water…making waters too dangerous for search and rescue until now. Boat teams plan to leave Oakville late this afternoon to set up at a “surge shelter” for assessment and rescue.
Though we do not yet know the full scope of need here, we know at least 40-50 animals had been rescued and that Southeast Iowa Animal Protection League is networking foster homes and shelters to house them. The staging area is underway at Lee County Fairgrounds and volunteers in, or on their way, to Iowa are on standby to move here.

3. NOTES: The Tragedy Of The Pigs
=========================
LOUISA COUNTY PIGS:
6/18/08: A hog factory with thousands of pigs flooded. The owner was able to evacuate most pigs, but 500 were released into waters. Some drowned…Others who swam for their lives and managed to hoist their bodies atop levees where SHOT by officials…because their hooves damaged sandbags. Most remain trapped in a water-surrounded area. Kinship Circle has contacted Farm Sanctuary, a rescue/advocacy group that helped farmed animals after Katrina.
6/19/08: Some loose pigs have been spotted in churchyards, inside homes, and on rooftops. One report said 70 pigs had convened in a single area. The Louisa County Sheriff estimates 100 or more pigs — from several flooded farms — are still wandering.
Most of the pigs were contained in one water engulfed area. In today’s conference call with Iowa Ag Dept. we learned none of these particular pigs are left. Local barge crews herded most out of the water. Survivors will return to livestock operations… We do not have precise numbers.
On a positive note, one boat rescuer searching for stranded companion animals today encountered a pig struggling in fast currents, clinging to a floating object. As the pig swam around the corner of a building, the rescuer was able to guide him toward an adjacent house with a relatively dry porch. Though impossible for the rescuer to board this giant pig on his small boat, he left the pig on dry ground with plenty of food.

5. NEWS: Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter Evacuated
==========================
Cats await transport from evacuated Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter..
ANIMAL SHELTER EVACUATED:
www.kcrg.com/younews/19883114.html
6/13/08: The evacuation of the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter began around 1:30pm Wednesday (6/11). Staff had been boated in for days previously by the CR Fire Department to care for the animals… Volunteers were alerted and streamed down the only road left to access the area laden with carriers. At this time, cats were brought by boat to a raised piece of road where trucks waited to take them the rest of the way through a channel of water crossing the road. From there they were put in a stock trailer and transported to KCC who had offered their beef cattle barn as a make-shift shelter.
Next came the small dogs. With 27 big dogs left to bring out, the fire department decided that the water crossing the road was too deep for animal control trucks to drive through safely. Hearts sank with the fear that animals would be left behind, but…CRFD and CRAS staff new it was time to get creative. The rest of the dogs were boated out through a neighboring farm field that was now part of the river. It was slow going even with 3 boats operating non-stop as the larger dogs had to be brought out virtually one by one so as not to cause an incident between two animals…

ALERT FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE SUPPORTER / PLEASE CROSS-POST:
6/13/08: Katrina/NOLA Rescuer Dead. Her Animals Need Help!
FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE:
We are shocked and dismayed by the untimely death of devoted New Orleans rescuer, Linda Potts. For the last 15 or more years of her life, Linda trapped, rescued and brought hope to homeless animals. Please help Linda’s surviving companion animals…and/or forward this to others. Kinship Circle
ALERT FROM / REPLY TO:
Charlotte Bass, table25 [at] bellsouth.net
Linda Potts, longtime rescuer and resident of New Orleans’ Holy Cross 9th ward neighborhood, was found dead in her gutted home on June 11, 2008. Linda volunteered for ARNO as a feeder/trapper and assisted many other New Orleans area rescue organizations with assistance in the field.
Linda, age 49, lived with her pets in a FEMA trailer next to her gutted home. Her death was officially classified as death from ‘natural causes’ as police report that there was no evidence of foul play. There seems to be conflicting opinions from neighbors — as well as suspect evidence found at the death scene — but the important thing right now is to get Linda’s pets rescued and into foster or permanent homes.
LINDA’S LEFT-BEHIND BABIES… CAN YOU FOSTER OR ADOPT?
Currently five animals are being held at the LA/SPCA and have been transferred in name to ARNO’s foster/adoption program. We thank the LA/SPCA for allowing these pets to be housed for one week at their facilities. It is paramount we move these pets to foster homes quickly, as LA/SPCA and ARNO have zero space at their respective shelters.
1. Blackie
Large…a handsome black lab who is just waiting for his next command… a good, good dog.
2. Lucky
Small…a precious white terrier mix, who reportedly is on daily heart meds. Scared, shaking a little, but sweet… just doesn’t know what is happening.
3. Dixie or Trixie (uncertain about name)
Medium…a beautiful cream/red color, not sure of her name yet, a sweet, but scared girl who obviously misses her Mom. Possibly a collie mix?
4. Tuffy
Large…will be the toughest to place… This old man is blind (no eyes), and almost deaf. He is just an old, handsome pit mix. He was protective of Linda while living in the FEMA trailer, but seems to be quite gentlemanly at the shelter with strangers handling him. I am not sure Tuffy gets along well with other dogs, as Linda never left him alone with the others.
5. The only cat…
…Though there was a black one whom the police saw run away… This guy is not exactly happy, but we all know how cats can be… He looks nice and healthy, too. I will try to find out his name.
TO FOSTER OR ADOPT ANY OF LINDA’S PETS, CONTACT ARNO:
Charlotte Bass Lilly, ARNO
www.animalrescueneworleans.org

504-289-2777 cell (no voice mail, but text away)
OR
Robin Beaulieu, ARNO Shelter Director
504-913-2328 cell & voice mail (texting is fine, too)
These pets have been through a traumatic event, had no contact with anyone for at least two days, then were picked up when the police called it in. Please help if you can…so Linda can rest in peace…
- When cross-posting INCLUDE PHOTOS so people can see these sweet peas.
- If you’re fostering and not able, ARNO will list these pets on PetFinder, and we’ll help any way we can.
- We’re trying to find the vet who has their records, but if they need inoculations or health certificates we’ll gladly do this at no charge for anyone willing to foster or adopt.
- We will also neuter the males after we have a foster or permanent home.
- All medicals at our vets included with accepting a pet into your home.
- No adoption charge, but an application and vet reference are required.
- Rescue groups: We’ll need a copy of your adoption application, contract and vet reference.
for the animals, always, Charlotte Bass Lilly

“Because pets suddenly orphaned from the rains could belong to someone in the community, it’s imperative they stay in the community,” says Della Maddalena of the Morgan County Humane Society. “By arranging for the Rescue Waggin’ to pick up and transfer dogs already at the shelter, we’re helping make space at Morgan County Humane Society for the influx of pets left homeless from [Indiana] flooding.”

KINSHIP CIRCLE ANIMAL DISASTER AID NETWORK - NOTES:
www.kinshipcircle.org/fact_sheets/KCDisasterAidNetwork.pdf
6/12/08: Since floods ravaged parts of Indiana (6/7/08), with hundreds of residents evacuated, KC Animal Disaster Aid Network has spoken with Indiana shelters/rescues to assess animal needs:
Terre Haute Humane Society: Not many calls for help from residents. Only one citizen south of shelter reports strays “everywhere.” A local boarding kennel has advertised housing for animals of people without resources. THHS has agreed to vaccinate the animals for them. Water is receding in Terre Haute…
Owen County Humane Society: Reports they are fine. Had to boat in to the shelter, but the shelter did not get any water in it.
Johnson County Animal Shelter: They seem to be the worst hit county. No response to inquiries yet…
Diann Wellman, EARS North Central Region Regional Director / Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin: EARS is not deploying at this time, having received similar information as KC that outside resources are not currently needed.
Former Katrina rescuer and Indiana resident Cris Stevens (also a fireman) has sought information for us from Emergency Management teams in Indiana.
So far no Indiana flood contacts have requested assistance, or their needs were met locally. If Indiana situation changes, we’ll provide updates.

HSUS DISASTER ANIMAL RESPONSE TEAM - FIELD NOTES:
6/11/08: The HSUS animal rescue team deployed to Morgan County, Ind., in response to a request for assistance in the aftermath of severe flooding in the region. Upon their arrival, the team coordinated with local officials to assess the situation and address any pressing animal needs.
Morgan County Humane Society was housing approximately 55 dogs who were rescued after the floods. The HSUS team provided them with logistical support, much-needed pet food and other sheltering supplies.
The team was also contacted by the local sheriff’s department to assist with animal rescue. With word from the Morgan County Humane Society that no further outside help was needed, The HSUS team returned to headquarters. The rescued dogs will be held at the Morgan County Humane Society until they are reunited with their guardians or adopted.

UPDATE/ Marine Expelled For Tossing Puppy Over Cliff
In This Alert:
1. UPDATE: Lance Cpl. David Motari “Being Processed For Separation” From Marine Corps
2. ENOUGH? What About Prosecution For Crime Of Animal Abuse?
3. ACTION: Ask Military To Overhaul Its Policy On Animals In War Zones
=======================
1. UPDATE: LANCE CPL. DAVID MOTARI EXPELLED FROM MARINES
=======================
6/11/08: The Marine Corps expels one Marine and disciplines another for their roles in a video showing a puppy tossed over a cliff to his death. Both soldiers were on patrol on Iraq at the time. In the video a man identified as David Motari dangles a black and white dog by the scruff of the neck, cooing: “Cute little puppy.” Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion baby-talks: “Ah, so cute, so cute…little puppy.” Motari then hurls the animal over a cliff into a rocky gulch. The dog, who looks about 12 weeks old, squeals while flying through the air. A thud is heard far below…
The 17-second video posted on YouTube drew sharp condemnation from animal rights groups when it came to light in March. “That’s mean. That’s mean, Motari,” an off-camera Encarnacion is heard telling the Marine who tossed the black and white dog. The off-camera Marine snickered slightly afterward.
Lance Cpl. David Motari, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Bay, is “being processed for separation” from the Marine Corps… He also received unspecified “non-judicial punishment.”
The second Marine, Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion, also received unspecified “non-judicial” punishment. Encarnacion is assigned to the Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego…
=======================
2. WHAT ABOUT PROSECUTION FOR THE CRIME OF ANIMAL ABUSE?
=======================
FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE: While we applaud the Marine Corps for expelling Motari and reprimanding his accomplice Encarnacion — animal cruelty is a CRIME. Our letters asked for the men to be charged with aggravated cruelty and intentional killing of a companion animal. We urged maximum penalties and psychological counseling…

Subject: China quake & the animals Newsletter
Welcome to the Anti-Fur Society’s first newsletter for the Chinese Animals Group!
THE ANIMALS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
China’s earthquake aftermath has taken the lives of a staggering number of people, estimated to be over 65,000 and over 12 million animals have perished. Countless dogs and cats are homeless, injured, and starving to death. Drinking water is polluted and there is a critical need for water pumps to provide water to animals. Reportedly, there are some 30,000 pet dogs in one province alone. Many of them now homeless. Since the dog cull has been in effect, it is questionable if the government will allow rescue to happen. Nevertheless, rescuers and volunteers are doing all they can to save as many animals as possible or at least offer them some relief amidst so much suffering. There is a desperate need for food for companion animals, and livestock feed, not to mention vaccines and other medication.
Various international agencies are helping in the disaster areas, including Chinese animal organizations which are greatly underfunded. When rescues are over, Chinese animal groups will have to continue helping the animals rescued as a result of this tragedy.
Our group has been working with several groups of animal caring people in Beijing and Shanghai. They dedicate their spare time and whatever little money they have to save abandoned animals. It is based on their recommendation that we are pleased to list here three Chinese animal organizations who are animal caring pioneers, and are also at the front helping earthquake victims. It is in great part, thanks to them, that animals in their areas have experienced care and compassion.
Check them out on “WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP” box.

NEW BEAUTIFUL WORLD
I am very pleased to report my meeting with Dan Z, whom I have been working with this past year, helping animal groups in China. Through Dan I have become acquainted with other animal rescuers in China, including the the Shanghai rescuer of 1400+ cats destined to restaurants in South of China. I have found out how easy it is to help people who are accomplishing great work for animals, making it do with very little. I met Dan at the H.S.I. conference in Orlando this past May 14-17 since she was awarded an internship by the Humane Society International. It was really great to meet her and also John Wu, a young veterinarian from Guangzhou where he is trying to build a shelter or some kind of animal protection agency. Most of us know that Guangzhou is the place where one of the most infamous live animal market exists, so we plan to maintain contact with this young man and offer him all the support we can.
Dan was presented with a trapping cage, the best there is, so I am told: Tomahawk cage for cats and raccoons. It is a collapsible cage with enough space to trap animals without stressing them. The group receiving this cage is “The New Beautiful World” a relatively new group in Beijing which has been responsible for trapping, spaying, neutering, and returning (TNR) at least 2500 cats. Imagine just how many unwanted litters have been prevented by the work of 10 people–most of them young man!
This belongs to someone in the group: blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_466a565b010008a8.html
I am also very pleased to say that Scarlett’s cats have received a great boost since they became godfathered by our group. We sent her enough for a new computer and to spay/neuter/rehome over 60 cats. Additionally, several people from our group have “adopted” her cats on a monthly basis. She is doing a fabulous job in taking care of her neighborhood stray cats. Check her out!
Thank you for reading our first newsletter for the Chinese animals!

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
Helping organizations in China directly is the best way to do it as they are in dire need of everything, and volunteers to come to help in the disaster areas. Added to the injury, they lack basic items we take for granted, including a Paypal account to receive donations. They have regular bank accounts which can be found on their websites, or listed below. To help these orgs receive donations on a timely fashion, The Anti-Fur Society is again offering to collect donations through its PayPal account and send the lump sum via Western Union, the most efficient way of sending money to China. If you wish to contact these organizations directly, you may do so thru their websites below or we can arrange for you to call them or write.
