Disaster Relief: Additional Resources

Below you can find links to animal advocacy organizations that provide emergency and long-term relief to the non-human animal victims of natural and man-made disasters, as well as more global resources that provide breaking news and information. Resources are organized topically, with general resources and the most recent disasters located at the top of the page.

NOTE: While I do include links to national animal welfare organizations below, these are meant as simple references only. If you’d like to donate money, time or supplies, please direct your resources to smaller, local/grassroots animal rescue, welfare and rights groups. To often, these national groups (*cough*HSUS*cough*) show up just in time for a photo op, and then get the hell outta Dodge. As an example, the HSUS raised approximately $20 million after Hurricane Katrina; much of that money remains unspent, three years later. Meanwhile, local groups are still struggling with the problem of stray and feral cats and dogs….and rather than help, the HSUS has the gall to offer a $2,500 bounty to help the FBI catch so-called “eco-terrorists” in California.

When in doubt, consult a charity rating guide such as Charity Navigator or Charity Watch. Or stop by a veg*n forum and post a question…we love to hear ourselves talk, yo! VeggieBoards and SuperVegan are two biggies, while Petfinder also hosts an active online animal rescue community.
