The Back Up Your Birth Contol Campaign is continuing to spread the word about Emergency Contraception (EC), the safe and effective method of backing up birth control.
The 2008 Day of Action is March 25th; Help get the word out about EC!
Across the nation over a hundred women’s health and medical organizations, students and individuals are gearing up for the seventh annual Back Up Your Birth Control Day of Action this year on Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
Seventh annual? Where the hell have I been?!

I’ve written about EC and PharmaNazis before; my take on the conscience clause boils down to “don’t want to dispense pills? then find another profession.” It’s pretty simple. If we allow pharmacists to opt out of filling prescriptions that don’t gel with their religious beliefs, the logical conclusion is a theocracy in which godbags won’t give AIDS patients their drugs because god hates fags, and to interfere with his punishment of their deviant lifestyles would be blasphemous. Hey, as a vegan, I don’t want to handle animal corpses; you don’t see me seeking employment as a cook or server in an omni restaurant and then refusing to handle anything made with animal ingredients. That would be…dumb, no?
But this year’s theme isn’t necessarily about fighting the pill counters for your legally prescribed meds; rather, it’s about the skyrocketing price of contraception in general and EC in particular.
The long-term answer, of course, is state and federal funds for contraception or, better yet, some national health care. In the meantime, there are some nice folks who can help you find low-cost EC:
To find an EC provider near you, many of whom can help you access low-cost or even free EC, call the toll-free, confidential, 24 Hour Emergency Contraception Hotline:
1-888-NOT-2-LATE
(English)
1-866-EN-TRES-DIAS
(Spanish)
Don’t end up like this woman.

Get blogging, bitchez!
A few weeks ago, I was chatting with my little sis online while the (seemingly never ending) CNN campaign coverage droned on in the background. At 24, Michelle is only five years younger than this featherhead – but sometimes, the gap seems so much wider.
Though I took some women and gender studies courses while majoring in psychology in college, it was only in the years after graduation that I really discovered and embraced feminism. Not that was an anti-feminist in college, not at all; I just didn’t question, criticize, and examine the patriarchical culture in which I was – am – immersed. Like most women my age, I took hard-earned rights such as reproductive rights and the right to vote for granted, and casually threw around misogynistic terms such as “bitch” and “slut” – and not with the end goal of reclaiming them for the feminist side. Even though I was receptive to my feminist professor’s teachings, it took the internets to introduce me to patriarchy-blaming, I guess. Age and maturity most likely greased the old vagina, too.
Looking at Michelle, I see much of my teenage self in her; just, exaggerated. She’s also studying psych, but she’s veered towards more marketable psych skills – think occupational psychology. She’s never had the benefit of women or gender studies courses – not even a one! – and she’s not exactly politically active, either. In fact, she’s so indifferent to current events – particularly women’s issues – that it’s a little alarming, actually. Even as a little kiddo, I read the local newspaper.
Which brings me back to our conversation. At the time, the election issue de jour was the sexist attacks on Hillary and her subsequent “breakdown”. Half-listening to the coverage in the background, and suddenly a bit curious, I asked Michelle who she planned on voting for in the primaries. She was non-committal; “anyone but Hillary” was her reply. “Why not Hillary?” asked I, knowing full well what her answer would be. “Just don’t like her.” No reason, just a visceral reaction.
Assuming (ok, hoping!) that Michelle’s indecision only extended to the primaries, and that surely (please?) she’d vote Democrat in the national election no matter what, I asked her whether she’d vote for Hillary if she was the Democratic nominee…or if she’d rather vote Republican than support Hillary. “Eh…I’d probably vote for the Republican.”

Yo! It’s Blog (for Enviro) Action Day!
According to the blogswarm’s www site, there are three things you can do to join the fifteen thousand (!) other green activists blogging for the planet today:
On October 15th, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind – the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.
Blog Action Day is about MASS participation. That means we need you! Here are 3 ways to participate:
* Post on your blog relating to the environment on Blog Action Day
* Donate your day’s earnings to an environmental charity
* Promote Blog Action Day around the web
I had a whole shit-you-should-be-doing-to-save-the-environment-but-you-aren’t-because-
it’s-totally-inconvenient-and-the-speciesist-jerks-at-the-sierra-club-aren’t-

(That, and I was busy moving my main blog over here. Welcome, welcome!) So. In two words: go veg. In spite of PETA, not because of them.
And if you want to donate to an enviro charity…I *heart* Farm Sanctuary.

Today is Blog for Impeachment Day! Can I get a w00t w00t?!
Via AliceDem at Booman Tribute (by way of Feministe):
On July 14, 1789 a mob of French patriots stormed the Bastille prison. It was proof that power no longer resided in the King.
On July 14, 2007 a group of bloggers from all across America will be blogging for impeachment. We invite all patriots to join us.
Bruce Godfrey, who so graciously hosted the celebrated Take Back the Blog event, has once again offered his services as a host.
We hope by this action we can demonstrate the widespread support for impeachment and shift the debate. We also hope to educate our political elite on the dangers posed by failing to impeach.
It is critically important for the future of our democracy that this criminal cabal and all of their works be repudiated. We ask for your support and participation.
Though Bruce’s announcement primarily asks for
arguments and posts that make the case for impeachment proceedings, for a vote of impeachment or for a removal after trial of any impeachable federal office holder. However, this blogswarm will happily accept well-written anti-impeachment (or pro-impeachment, of course) posts from any member of the Maryland Bloggers Alliance as noted at the blogroll on the left sidebar, or from liberal/civil libertarian bloggers offering a principled, political or practical case for opposition to impeachment from that perspective. Academic scholarship on impeachment would be MOST welcome to contribute to the debate for all involved.
this featherhead’s legal expertise is nascent at best. If the whole of the Bush presidency doesn’t constitute impeachable offenses, I don’t know what does. (Sentencing 68,000 women to death annually because they had the temerity to have teh sex? Check. Slaughtering 974,000 Iraqis to stroke daddy’s ego? Check. Thumbing your nose at the Constitution? Check, check, and check.) And that’s really the bulk of my argument – call it the “WTF!?%$#” line of reasoning. If Clinton’s hummer was enough to get him nearly-impeached, then Bush (and Cheney and Rove and Gonzalez) ought to be strung up in the public square by their elephantitic nutsacks. Common sense and human decency, people.
Anyway, in lieu of an “academic” “legal” “argument”, I come bearing a big fat link roundup of impeach-the-fucker resources. Hope y’all will let me in on the party, even if all I have to offer is the warm shit beer.
On that note, do check in with Bruce to read the more, ahem, mature impeachment posts.
Crazy impeachment goodness after the flip. It’s like a librrrl’s wet dream down there.
