I wonder how involved Ms. Newkirk is in the day-to-day operations at PETA, whether she signs off on all their campaigns, etc. Because the more she talks, the harder it is to defend even those campaigns which, on the surface, don't seem all that sexist to me (i.e., "Breast is Best").

And, as a member of the so-called "second wave," her attitude is kind of baffling; "feminists" from her generation seem more likely to be "anti-porn" than "pro". So the result is that you get otherwise "sex positive" "third wavers" condemning (all of) PETA's nude campaigns while, say, featuring naked torsos on their own book covers, while a "second waver" defends the gratuitous use of nudity and the objectification of women. Like, huh!?

Scare quotes because I'm not crazy about any of these terms, and also because Ingrid doesn't strike me as very feminist.

I tend to agree with what's being suggested here: PETA decries the "thing-ing" or assumption of property-status of nonhuman animals, while, in effect, given the context of asymmetric power relations - the gender structure - in our society, where women are assumed to be of-less value than men (their sexualization, e.g.), exploiting women as such seems to violate PETA's very premises. It seems like Ms. Newkirk A) challenges speciesism, which is explicitly anti-oppression, while B) accepting the assumption that women "enjoy being sexual things," which belies the former challenge to oppressive relationships.
