John McCain, bravely drawing the line at Holocaust apologism.

‘Cause it takes a real maverick to condemn genocide:
After enduring criticism for
weeksmonths [seriously, LA Times, where the fuck have y'all been!?], John McCain broke Thursday with two controversial televangelists whose endorsements he once trumpeted in a bid to win support from religious conservatives. At a late-afternoon rally in Stockton, McCain said he rejected the endorsement of John Hagee after learning of a recording in which the San Antonio pastor portrayed Adolf Hitler as being sent by God to force Jews “to come back to the land of Israel.”
McCain said he had not been aware of the comments — which were made in a sermon in the late 1990s and turned up recently on the Internet — when Hagee endorsed him in February.
In context (because it only gets better in context), Hagee’s Holocaust-hearting sermon goes something like this:
Going in and out of biblical verse, Hagee preached: “‘And they the hunters should hunt them,’ that will be the Jews. ‘From every mountain and from every hill and from out of the holes of the rocks.’ If that doesn’t describe what Hitler did in the holocaust you can’t see that.”
He goes on: “Theodore Hertzel is the father of Zionism. He was a Jew who at the turn of the 19th century said, this land is our land, God wants us to live there. So he went to the Jews of Europe and said ‘I want you to come and join me in the land of Israel.’ So few went that Hertzel went into depression. Those who came founded Israel; those who did not went through the hell of the holocaust.
“Then god sent a hunter. A hunter is someone with a gun and he forces you. Hitler was a hunter. And the Bible says — Jeremiah writing — ‘They shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill and from the holes of the rocks,’ meaning there’s no place to hide. And that might be offensive to some people but don’t let your heart be offended. I didn’t write it, Jeremiah wrote it. It was the truth and it is the truth. How did it happen? Because God allowed it to happen. Why did it happen? Because God said my top priority for the Jewish people is to get them to come back to the land of Israel.”
For even more context, here’s the audio, via Talk To Action:
So, to sum up, this?:
“I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are — were recipients of the judgment of God for that. The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades.” He later added: “Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans.”
Eh, wevs, those queers and their queer butt sex probably had it coming.
Earlier in the program, Gross asked if Hagee believed that “all Muslims have a mandate to kill Christians and Jews,” to which Hagee replied, “Well, the Quran teaches that. Yes, it teaches that very clearly.”
Totally cool, since all Muslims are terra-ists and we’re in a 100-year war on terra and don’t you know those crazy terra-ists want to kill us zomg!!!1!?
Hagee, pastor of the 16,000-member Cornerstone Church, last week had announced a “slave sale” to raise funds for high school seniors in his church bulletin, “The Cluster.”
The item was introduced with the sentence “Slavery in America is returning to Cornerstone” and ended with “Make plans to come and go home with a slave.”
Yawn. Everyone knows racism is dead.
“Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist.”
Ha, good one, pastor! Those wimmins be cunts, yo!
What you’ll find is a white televangelist, the Rev. John Hagee, lecturing in front of an enormous diorama. Wielding a pointer, he pokes at the image of a woman with Pamela Anderson-sized breasts, her hand raising a golden chalice. The woman is “the Great Whore,” Mr. Hagee explains, and she is drinking “the blood of the Jewish people.” That’s because the Great Whore represents “the Roman Church,” which, in his view, has thirsted for Jewish blood throughout history, from the Crusades to the Holocaust.
O well that’s not cool, pastor. (Funny, but not cool.) I don’t want that nutbag Donohue on my back, so I’m gonna have to repudiate that statement right there. We’re still BBFs though, mmmkay?
But celebrating the Holocaust is one! toe! over! the! line! Way to take a stand, Senator McCain. A True American Hero ™, you are.
