Iraq Fax-in: Let’s Show Congress How We Feel
March 19 marks the 5th Anniversary of Bush’s disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq - yet there is no end in sight.
The costs so far are staggering: 4,000 young Americans killed, tens of thousands maimed… 1 million Iraqis killed, millions maimed… $562 billion in tax dollars stolen from our children… $3 trillion cost to our economy through veterans care, weapons replacement, higher oil prices, and the collapsing dollar. All that in just 5 years!
We elected a Democratic Congress in 2006 to bring our troops home, but they keep giving Bush blank checks. Incredibly, Congress will soon vote on another $102 billion blank check.
On this 5th Anniversary, it is time for everyone who hates this occupation to do something about it. And we’re making it as simple and effective as we can.
We’re calling it the Iraq Fax-In. It’s like a sit-in, only you can do it from home: iraqfaxin.com
1. Fax an image to Congress that visually expresses how you feel about the invasion and occupation of Iraq. We’ve posted a few ideas, but we welcome all of yours! - iraqfaxin.com
2. Email your Representatives by signing our “Out of Iraq” petition on the right side here: iraqfaxin.com

Today is the five-year anniversary of the beginning of the war in Iraq. More than four million Iraqis have fled their homes. That’s one out of every seven Iraqis – the equivalent of 42 million Americans displaced in the United States.
The U.S. and international media are increasingly reporting on this humanitarian disaster. The Wall Street Journal, on Monday, published a front page story on the crisis. Yet our own President has yet to even publicly acknowledge it.
Looking for a few more reasons to oppose the Iraq war? Not that you needed them, but we’ve got 141 million more for you.
Our new report, A Climate of War, catalogs the greenhouse gas emissions of the Iraq war, along with an accounting of what we could have bought if we were spending that money fighting climate change instead of a war for oil. Here are some of the shocking facts:
1. Projected total US spending on the Iraq war could cover all of the global investments in renewable power generation that are needed between now and 2030 in order to halt current warming trends.
2. The war is responsible for at least 141 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) since March 2003. To put this in perspective, CO2 released by the war to date equals the emissions from putting 25 million more cars on the road in the US this year.
3. In 2006, the US spent more on the war in Iraq than the whole world spent on investment in renewable energy.

One million people vote to support impeachment of Bush and Cheney!; Iraq war is now the second longest war in US history
“It was the war in Iraq that led to more than one million Americans voting to support the impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in the largest on-line impeachment survey in US history,” stated Ramsey Clark, the former US Attorney General.
Clark’s announcement about the results of Vote to Impeach/ImpeachBush.org comes on the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war.
Ramsey Clark announced the launch of the impeachment effort at a rally of a half million people on January 18, 2003 on the national mall in Washington DC.
ImpeachBush.org which houses the Vote to Impeach on-line referendum has been visited by millions of people and more than one million have signed the on-line petition or paper petitions that have been circulated door to door in neighborhoods around the country.
“This is the largest grassroots impeachment effort in US history,” Clark stated. “Impeachment now will stop the continuing course of criminal conduct of the Bush Administration, which becomes more dangerous each day. President Bush is working at a frenetic pace to prove in the face of all the facts that his policies are right and heroic.”
Clark continued, “Impeachment is not a political question. It is a constitutional duty. It is the means by which the people, through their elected representatives, can protect their country from a lawless “President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States” by removing them from office. A failure to act in the face of a persistent, systemic and proudly proclaimed course of criminal conduct can bring the country to ruin.”

This evening will mark 5 years since President Bush officially launched his ill-conceived preemptive invasion of Iraq. (To watch my new video on the 5 Year Anniversary click here.)
At the beginning of this war, whether we agreed with it or not, Congress and the American people saluted the brave service of the men and women of our military.
Today, five years later, it is well past time that we truly honor this service by bringing all American troops home from Iraq. This war has affected the lives of so many American families. The stories we hear from our friends, family members, and co-workers are truly heartbreaking – from the tragic losses of life and devastating injuries, to those who have returned but still suffer mental trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Many of us personally know one of the 4,000 soldiers who have died or one of nearly 40,000 Americans who have been wounded.
Many of us have a friend or family member who has had to suffer repeated 15-month tours – separated from family and often with little break in between assignments.
Beyond the personal losses that so many have endured, now all Americans are feeling the financial effects of the war, as the fruits of our economy (nearly $500 billion to date) are drained into this never-ending engagement. Just imagine the investments that could have been made if this money was spent here at home, rather than fueling this massive war machine half a world away.
This tragedy extends to innocent Iraqis as well. From children to their teachers, shopkeepers to waiters – even the low estimates of Iraqi civilian deaths are near 90,000. Some estimate the death toll to be in the hundreds of thousands.
Americans will sacrifice a great deal to protect our national security and to bring peace to troubled regions of the world. But what have we gained for all of our sacrifices in Iraq? Today, we are more vulnerable then ever with a rebuilding Al Qaeda, a resurgent Iran, and a totally destabilized Iraq.
Even worse, President Bush and Vice-President Cheney brought us into this calamity in Iraq based on deliberate lies and misdirection. The Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people with false claims of Iraqi nuclear weapons, Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, and Iraqi relations with Al Qaeda. These lies were fed with great enthusiasm by those who stood to benefit financially and politically from this war.
We must renew our call for a dramatic change of course. Last week in Congress, I introduced a resolution that condemns the Bush Administration for this unnecessary war and calls for an immediate redeployment of troops. (Click here to read the resolution.) Please contact your Member of Congress and urge them to co-sponsor this important resolution.
