Fall Cleaning
October 18th, 2006 6:19 pm by Kelly GarbatoFor the sake of those links caught in the Firefoxy pits of bookmark purgatory, a link dump.
Let’s start with one link that I’ve been sitting on for quite some time now: a series of reviews (“critiques” might be more accurate, since the book is lambasted) of Jonathan Wells’ The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design. “Divide and conquer” is the strategy here: members of The Panda’s Thumb each tackle a different chapter of the book, preferably one which falls in their respective area of expertise. So far, ten separate reviews are in, with another ten to go. (Pffft! Procrastinators!) A list of reviews is available here.
On AfterElton.com, Michael Ricci explores the oft-overlooked genre of gay fan fiction (slash). Far from being a new development, slash began some 40 years ago after the cancellation of Star Trek. (Given the veritable sausage-festivity of the show, the possible pairings boggle the mind. Although it doesn’t take a Trekkie to guess which two compadres got it on like bunny rabbits.) In recent years, though, teh internets have seen the popularity of fan fiction – and slash – ahem, explode.
Wil Wheaton ponders the viability of a straight-to-DVD model for shows that have received the axe from shortsighted tv execs. Season 2 of Firefly, anyone?
Another threat to the environment (and, more to the point, our publicly owned landscapes): douchebag dumpers. Though the true cost of cleaning up all those illegally dumped rusted cars, broken washers, and toxic trash heaps isn’t easily quantified, California estimates its cleanup costs to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $87 million. That’s annually, folks.
Misogynists are rebranding their policies as “feminist” – which won’t come as a surprise to regular readers of Pandagon or Feministing.
Planned Parenthood offers their take on Kirby Dick’s This Film Is Not Yet Rated via an interview with the big Dick himself. Disappointingly, they fail to call out the filmmaker on his use of misogynist imagery to promote the flick. Although much of the conversation focuses on women’s sexuality and violence against women as depicted in movies, the interviewer has a distinctly male name (Jon Platner). An oversight, or something more sinister?
Iraqi women are worse off under GW’s rule than that of Saddam.
Trent Lott is getting screwed by his insurance company post-Katrina. Tiny violin, anyone?
Tom Cruise – godbag, closeted homosexual, spousal abuser…butt plug?
Ladies, today is Love Your Body Day!
